DMK Leader Challenges Chief Minister Over Stampede Aftermath
DMK leader and former minister V. Senthil Balaji on Monday questioned Chief Minister M.K. Stalin's response to the Karur stampede, which claimed the lives of seven women on March 23. Balaji, who is currently out on bail in a cash-for-jobs case, demanded a thorough investigation and accountability for the tragedy.
The stampede occurred during a free saree distribution event organized by the Tamil Nadu government in Karur district. Seven women died and several others were injured in the chaos. Balaji's remarks come amid growing criticism of the state government's handling of the incident.
Balaji's Demands for Accountability
Speaking to reporters in Chennai, Balaji said, "The Chief Minister should explain why such an incident happened and what steps are being taken to prevent future occurrences. The families of the deceased deserve justice and compensation." He also called for a high-level inquiry into the stampede and urged the government to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
Balaji's criticism is notable as he belongs to the same party as Stalin. The DMK has been facing flak from opposition parties, including the AIADMK and BJP, over the incident. The AIADMK has demanded the resignation of the district collector and other officials involved in organizing the event.
Government's Response and Compensation
The Tamil Nadu government has announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of the deceased and free treatment for the injured. Chief Minister Stalin expressed grief over the incident and ordered an inquiry. However, Balaji questioned the adequacy of these measures, stating, "Merely announcing compensation is not enough. We need systemic changes to ensure such tragedies don't happen again."
The stampede has reignited debates over crowd management and safety protocols during public events. Opposition parties have accused the government of negligence and poor planning. The DMK, however, has defended its record, pointing to previous successful events.
Political Implications and Internal Dissent
Balaji's public questioning of Stalin's response signals potential internal dissent within the DMK. Balaji, a close aide of former CM M. Karunanidhi, has been a prominent figure in the party despite his legal troubles. His remarks may put pressure on Stalin to take more decisive action.
Political analysts suggest that the Karur stampede could become a rallying point for opposition parties in the run-up to the 2026 assembly elections. The AIADMK and BJP have already launched attacks on the DMK government, accusing it of being insensitive to the plight of the poor.
Next Steps and Safety Measures
The state government has formed a committee to investigate the stampede and recommend safety measures. Balaji urged the committee to submit its report quickly and implement its recommendations without delay. "The safety of citizens should be the top priority," he said.
Meanwhile, the families of the victims are still awaiting full compensation and support. Local residents have expressed anger over the incident, demanding accountability from officials. The Karur stampede serves as a grim reminder of the need for better crowd management and emergency preparedness at public events.
