DMK-MNM Alliance Negotiations Hit Symbol Roadblock in Tamil Nadu
Seat-sharing discussions between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and actor Kamal Haasan's Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) encountered a significant obstacle on Thursday. The primary point of contention revolves around the election symbol, with DMK insisting that MNM candidates contest under its iconic 'rising sun' emblem. In contrast, MNM has firmly communicated its intention to use its own allocated 'torchlight' symbol for the upcoming Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Assembly polls.
MNM Stands Firm on Symbol Autonomy
MNM general secretary A. Arunachalam addressed reporters following the second round of talks, clarifying that the number of seats is not the issue. "DMK asked us to contest on their 'rising sun' symbol, but we informed them that we will contest on our own symbol just like how we contested in 2019 and 2021," Arunachalam stated. He emphasized that there is no disagreement regarding seat numbers, though party sources revealed that DMK had offered two seats to MNM.
Party president Kamal Haasan has called an emergency meeting of senior functionaries on Friday to deliberate on this impasse. Additionally, MNM has instructed its district secretaries and heads of various party wings and committees to join a broader meeting to discuss the situation.
Compromise Formula and Parallel Negotiations
Sources indicate that discussions explored a potential compromise formula, where MNM would contest one seat on its own 'torchlight' symbol and the other on DMK's 'rising sun'. This model is currently employed by the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), which contests three of its four allotted seats on DMK's symbol and one on its own.
Meanwhile, negotiations between DMK and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) are also stalled. CPM leaders have conveyed their demand for more seats than they received in the 2021 assembly elections, but DMK has yet to respond, according to CPM sources.
Political Developments and Broader Context
In related political developments, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) president Thol Thirumavalavan met with Chief Minister M.K. Stalin at his Alwarpet residence in Chennai on Thursday. This meeting underscores the ongoing alliance-building efforts ahead of the elections.
The symbol dispute highlights the complexities of coalition politics in Tamil Nadu, where parties balance electoral pragmatism with brand identity. MNM's insistence on its own symbol reflects its commitment to maintaining a distinct political identity, while DMK's push for a unified symbol aims to consolidate voter support under a recognizable emblem.
