DMK Alliance Stages Widespread Protests in Trichy Over LPG Shortage
District units of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and its alliance partners organized significant protests in Trichy on Sunday, strongly condemning the Union government for the ongoing LPG shortage. This demonstration was part of a broader state-wide agitation announced by the party, highlighting growing public discontent over essential commodity supply issues.
Minister Nehru Leads Demonstration Near Head Post Office
Municipal Administration Minister K N Nehru spearheaded one of the two separate protests in the city, addressing cadres near the Head Post Office. He emphasized that LPG supply falls exclusively under the purview of the Union government, countering claims from former Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami that the state should intervene immediately.
"The state can only request and procure supplies; it is the Union government's responsibility to ensure adequate distribution," Nehru stated. He further criticized NDA alliance parties, asserting that if they genuinely cared about the people, they would take proactive steps to resolve the crisis. Nehru also noted that Chief Minister M K Stalin has already convened meetings and is working on alternative arrangements to mitigate the hardship caused by the shortage.
Minister Poyyamozhi Highlights Pending Dues in Ponmalai Protest
In Ponmalai, within his constituency, School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi led another protest, where he sharply criticized the Union government over pending financial dues to the state. "The Union government owes my department ₹3,458 crore, which has not been released," he declared. Poyyamozhi used this delay as a political metaphor, urging supporters to ensure the BJP is placed on a 'waiting list' in the upcoming elections.
Later, speaking to reporters, Poyyamozhi reassured the public that the state government has taken necessary steps to ensure the breakfast scheme continues without disruption, despite the LPG shortage. This move aims to protect vulnerable populations from the effects of the supply crisis.
Protests Extend to Neighbouring Districts
Similar demonstrations were held in neighbouring districts, amplifying the statewide nature of the agitation. Natural Resources Minister S Regupathy led the protest in Pudukkottai, while former Minister V Senthil Balaji headed the agitation in Karur. Leaders from DMK's alliance parties actively participated in these events, showcasing a united front against the Union government's policies.
Protesters across locations raised slogans against the NDA government, reflecting widespread frustration over the LPG shortage and broader governance issues. The coordinated efforts underscore the DMK's strategy to leverage public grievances for political mobilization ahead of future elections.
