The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party on Saturday unveiled its comprehensive list of 164 candidates for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections scheduled for April 23. The announcement, made by Chief Minister and DMK President M K Stalin, revealed a strategic blend of experienced incumbents and fresh faces, with the party retaining most sitting ministers while introducing more than 60 first-time candidates.
Strategic Retentions and Notable Exclusions
In a significant development, three sitting ministers - N Kayalvizhi Selvaraj, T Mano Thangaraj, and R Gandhi - were denied party tickets for the forthcoming elections. Meanwhile, the list features prominent figures who recently crossed over from the opposition AIADMK, including three-time former chief minister O Panneerselvam, who has been fielded from the Bodinayakanur constituency.
Panneerselvam's associates Paul Manoj Pandian and R Vaithilingam have also received DMK tickets for Alangulam and Orathanadu constituencies respectively, marking a strategic incorporation of former AIADMK leaders into the DMK fold.
Stalin's Announcement and Campaign Plans
Addressing reporters during the list's release, Chief Minister M K Stalin remarked, "Though we are late, we are the latest", emphasizing the party's comprehensive preparation. Stalin explained the delayed announcement resulted from extensive negotiations with alliance partners, stating that while 2021 featured a "mega alliance", the current coalition represents a "mega mega alliance" requiring careful seat distribution to satisfy all participating parties.
The Chief Minister outlined the party's campaign roadmap, revealing that DMK's election manifesto will be released on Sunday, with his personal campaign commencing from March 31. Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin will begin campaigning from April 1, while DMK Member of Parliament Kanimozhi Karunanidhi will start her campaign activities from March 30.
Chennai Constituencies and Demographic Diversity
In the capital city of Chennai, DMK has retained 11 candidates, including Chief Minister Stalin himself, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, and ministers Ma Subramanian and P K Sekarbabu. The candidate list showcases remarkable demographic diversity, featuring the party's oldest candidate - 86-year-old Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan - alongside its youngest contender, 26-year-old V Kokila Mani contesting from Avanashi constituency.
Western Belt Focus and Key Contests
The DMK has strategically sharpened its focus on Tamil Nadu's western belt, aiming to breach the traditional AIADMK stronghold that accounted for 33 of its Members of Legislative Assembly in the 2021 elections. In a direct challenge to AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, who is contesting from his home turf for the eighth consecutive time, DMK has fielded C Kasi, state deputy secretary of the party's labour wing.
Beyond Coimbatore's direct contests, the relocation of former minister V Senthil Balaji from Aravakurichi to Coimbatore South constituency sends a strategic message to AIADMK and its district strongman S P Velumani. Senthil Balaji will face sitting AIADMK legislator Amman K Arjunan in Coimbatore South, while DMK's N R Karthikeyan will contest against AIADMK's candidate in Thondamuthur.
Southern Constituencies and High-Profile Matchups
In southern Tamil Nadu, several high-profile contests are taking shape. In Thiruparankundram constituency, which recently witnessed tensions over the Dheepam controversy, AIADMK's Rajan Chellappa will compete against DMK's Krithiga Thangapandi. The Bodinayakanur constituency will feature a particularly notable contest between three-time former chief minister O Panneerselvam (now representing DMK) and AIADMK's V T Narayanan.
Panneerselvam's associates face their own challenges, with R Vaithilingam contesting against an AIADMK candidate in Orathanadu and Manoj Pandian facing opposition in Alangulam constituency. These contests represent critical battlegrounds in DMK's comprehensive strategy to secure victory across Tamil Nadu's diverse political landscape.
The candidate list reflects DMK's calculated approach to the upcoming elections, balancing continuity with renewal while strategically positioning itself in key constituencies across the state. With campaigning set to intensify in the coming weeks, political observers will closely monitor how these candidate selections influence voter sentiment in Tamil Nadu's highly competitive political environment.
