DMK Announces Candidates for 2026 Puducherry Polls; INDIA Bloc Faces Internal Rifts
DMK Reveals 2026 Puducherry Candidates Amid INDIA Bloc Tensions

DMK Unveils Candidate List for 2026 Puducherry Assembly Elections

In a significant political development, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has officially announced its candidates for the upcoming 2026 assembly polls in the Union territory of Puducherry. The party will contest in 13 constituencies as part of the INDIA bloc, setting the stage for a highly anticipated electoral battle.

Renomination of Sitting Legislators and Key Contests

The DMK has demonstrated strong confidence in its current representatives by re-nominating all six sitting Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs). This strategic move aims to leverage their incumbency advantage and established voter bases. In a bold political maneuver, the party has fielded candidate S S Rangan in the Mangalam constituency. This decision positions him directly against the incumbent Chief Minister and founder of the All India NR Congress (AINRC), N Rangasamy, making it one of the most closely watched contests in the election.

Internal Rifts Within the INDIA Bloc

Despite the alliance framework, the INDIA bloc is experiencing internal tensions. The DMK had allocated one seat from its share to the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK). However, in a surprising turn of events, the VCK has officially declared its intention to contest the polls independently in three constituencies. The party stated it will support INDIA bloc candidates in the remaining constituencies.

VCK president Thol Thirumavalavan issued a statement explaining the decision, citing a "prolonged delay" and "lack of cooperation" from both the Congress and DMK as the primary reasons for the fallout. This development threatens to fragment opposition votes and could impact the bloc's overall performance.

Potential Candidate Adjustments and Alliance Dynamics

In response to the VCK's stance, the DMK may announce a candidate for the seat originally allocated to VCK if reconciliation efforts within the INDIA bloc fail before the nomination deadline. Earlier, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPM had also announced its decision to contest independently, further complicating the alliance's cohesion.

The Congress party is yet to release its list of candidates. Once announced, both DMK and Congress will work to ensure the withdrawal of nomination papers of their candidates in constituencies allotted to their respective partners, aiming to avoid vote-splitting before the March 26 deadline.

Protests and Dissent Within Congress

Adding to the political turmoil, supporters of former Chief Minister V Narayanasamy continued their protest for the second consecutive day on Tuesday. They accused Lok Sabha MP and Puducherry Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president V Vaithilingam of denying a seat for Narayanasamy to contest the polls. The protesters picketed the PPCC office and blocked roads, demanding the removal of Vaithilingam, highlighting internal discord within the Congress party.

NDA Camp Preparations and Electoral Landscape

On the other side of the political spectrum, constituents of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) camp, including the AINRC, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), and LJK, have already announced their candidates earlier. The Union territory of Puducherry comprises a total of 30 assembly seats, making every constituency crucial in determining the final outcome.

As the 2026 assembly polls approach, the political landscape in Puducherry is marked by strategic candidate placements, alliance negotiations, and internal party conflicts, setting the stage for a highly competitive and dynamic election season.
