DMK Chief M K Stalin Kicks Off Assembly Election Campaign in Tiruvarur

Chief Minister M K Stalin has officially commenced his assembly election campaign in Tiruvarur, marking a significant move early this week. This location holds deep symbolic importance, as it is not only the native place of his late father, M Karunanidhi, but also because the Cauvery delta region has historically been a critical stronghold for the DMK's path to power in Tamil Nadu.

Targeting the Central Districts: DMK's High Strike Rate

In the 2021 election, the DMK demonstrated remarkable success by securing 37 out of 41 seats in the central districts, achieving the highest strike rate in the state. This time, Stalin aims to replicate that performance, with a focused strategy on wooing farmers across the delta region. The party has made key promises, including the provision of free modern motor pump sets, which are expected to appeal directly to the agricultural community.

Farmers are spread across 20 constituencies in the central region, which comprises nine districts. In addition to the pump sets, the DMK has announced a hike in the minimum support price for paddy to Rs 3,500 per quintal. Interestingly, the AIADMK has also made a similar promise, leading to skepticism among farmers. "The parties should give a clear time frame for implementing these promises," said Swamimalai S Vimal Nathan, secretary of the Tamil Nadu Cauvery Farmers Protection Association in Thanjavur, highlighting the cautious attitude of the farming community.

DMK's Multi-Faceted Strategy: Cabinet Berths and Candidate Selection

Wooing farmers is just one component of the DMK's comprehensive election strategy. The party has awarded seven cabinet berths to its leaders from the central region, all of whom have been renominated in their respective seats this time. Prominent leaders include K N Nehru, Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, and T R B Rajaa, showcasing the DMK's reliance on experienced figures.

Furthermore, the DMK has strategically roped in former AIADMK minister R Vaithilingam and fielded him in Orathanadu, the only segment in Thanjavur district where the DMK suffered a loss in 2021. In urban areas, the party is banking on development projects, such as Tidel Parks, to attract votes and bolster its electoral prospects.

Challenges Ahead: Alliances and Factional Feuds

However, political observers note that this election may not be as straightforward for the DMK as it was in 2021. Several challenges loom large, including factional feuds within the party, the alliance between AIADMK and AMMK, and the entry of TVK's leader Joseph Vijay into the political fray. These factors could complicate the DMK's campaign efforts.

One significant challenge is the alliance of AIADMK and AMMK in key constituencies like Mannargudi, Tiruvaiyaru, Papanasam, Thiruvidaimaruthur (SC), and Peravurani. A DMK functionary expressed concern, stating, "Handing over constituencies like Manapparai and Nagapattinam to allies over and again dilutes the morale of grassroots functionaries." This sentiment underscores internal tensions that could impact the party's performance.

Candidate Dynamics and Alliance Strategies

With sitting MLAs dropped in at least eight constituencies, including four in Trichy district, new candidates may face a tough battle against the AIADMK – BJP – AMMK alliance. To enhance the strike rate for the broader alliance, the DMK has allocated certain 'safe seats' to allies such as Congress, Communists, and pro-Muslim outfits like the IUML.

Conversely, the DMK has retained challenging seats and fielded strong candidates against AIADMK's sitting MLAs and former ministers, including R Kamaraj in Nannilam, O S Manian in Vedaranyam, and C Vijayabaskar in Viralimalai. This dual approach aims to balance support from allies while securing difficult constituencies.

AIADMK's Strategic Missteps and DMK's Confidence

What may work in the DMK's favor is the AIADMK's strategy of allocating tough seats to allies like BJP and PMK. A senior AMMK functionary criticized this move, saying, "AIADMK should have contested Thanjavur and Tiruvarur instead of allotting it to BJP. TMC contesting on BJP symbol in Kumbakonam against the three-time DMK MLA Anbazhagan is a blunder." This misstep could potentially benefit the DMK.

Additional hurdles include the candidature of TVK leader Joseph Vijay in Trichy East and AIADMK's Leema Rose, which may pose challenges for the DMK. Despite these obstacles, Trichy strongman K N Nehru remains confident. "Last time we won most seats. This time, it will be no different," he asserted, reflecting the party's optimism in the face of adversity.
