DMK Campaigner Targeted in Violent Attack During Election Campaign
In a disturbing incident of political violence, DMK's prominent campaigner and debate anchor 'Dindigul' I. Leoni was attacked with glass bottles while campaigning in Trichy on Sunday night. The attack occurred around 7:30 PM at Keezha Pudur near Palakkarai, which falls under the Trichy East assembly constituency, sending shockwaves through the political gathering.
Violent Assault During Campaign Event
According to eyewitness accounts and police reports, Leoni was campaigning from his vehicle when suddenly a glass bottle was hurled at him from his left side. The projectile narrowly missed the 68-year-old campaigner and shattered on the roof of his van, as captured in video footage that has since circulated widely on social media platforms.
The attack created immediate tension at the gathering, with DMK supporters scrambling to identify the perpetrators. Leoni appeared visibly stunned by the sudden violence, which disrupted what had been a routine campaign event in the crucial election season.
Police Investigation and Legal Action
Following the attack, Leoni filed a formal complaint at the Palakkarai police station later that same night. In his statement, he described how approximately five individuals approached the gathering on two-wheelers while blowing whistles before launching the bottle attack.
The Palakkarai police have registered a comprehensive case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections 191(ii), 191(iii), 118(1), 351(iii), and 62. These charges pertain to serious offenses including rioting, armed rioting, causing hurt by dangerous weapons, criminal intimidation, and attempts to commit criminal acts. Authorities have confirmed that an active investigation is underway to identify and apprehend the suspects.
Political Response and Social Media Reaction
Leoni took to his social media accounts on X and Instagram to share his experience and respond to the attack. In a video statement, the veteran campaigner characterized the assault as a "vile act" by opposition parties who he claimed were acting out of "fear of losing the election."
The DMK campaigner made it clear that neither he nor his party would be intimidated by such tactics. He declared that his campaign efforts would become "more intense hereafter" as a direct response to the attack, demonstrating his resolve to continue political activities despite the violent interruption.
Background of the Targeted Campaigner
'Dindigul' I. Leoni serves as the chairperson of the Tamil Nadu Textbook and Educational Services Corporation and has been one of the DMK's most visible and effective campaigners for many years. His distinctive style and debating skills have made him a recognizable figure in Tamil Nadu politics, particularly during election seasons when he travels extensively to support party candidates.
The attack on such a prominent political figure has raised concerns about election-related violence as campaigning intensifies across the state. Political observers note that while Tamil Nadu has generally maintained peaceful electoral processes, isolated incidents of violence occasionally surface during heated campaign periods.
Local authorities have increased security measures in the area following the incident, and police officials have assured the public that they are pursuing all leads to identify those responsible for the attack. The investigation continues as political parties across the spectrum have called for maintaining peace and decorum during the ongoing election campaign season.
