Ex-Congress Chief Bhupen Borah Fights Bihpuria Seat for BJP

Former Assam Congress President Bhupen Borah Joins BJP, Eyes Bihpuria Seat in High-Profile Contest

In a significant political development, Bhupen Kumar Borah, the former president of the Assam Congress and a two-time MLA, has made a dramatic switch to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He is now set to contest the Bihpuria seat in Lakhimpur district under the saffron banner for the first time, turning this constituency into one of the most closely watched electoral battles of the season.

Electoral Rivals and Key Contenders in Bihpuria

The 55-year-old Borah will face off against Narayan Bhuyan, a 55-year-old first-time candidate from the Congress party. Additionally, two other contenders are in the fray: Diganta Gogoi of the Voters Party International and Independent candidate Hemen Gogoi. However, it is Borah's high-profile political defection that has dominated pre-election conversations, capturing the attention of voters and analysts alike.

Bhupen Borah's Political Journey: From Victories to Defeats

Borah's political career in Bihpuria has been marked by contrasting fortunes. His initial victory came in 2006, when he narrowly defeated AGP candidate Kesharam Bora by just 593 votes. He followed this with a more commanding win in 2011, defeating Bora by a significant margin of 12,156 votes.

However, the subsequent elections proved challenging for Borah as a Congress candidate. In 2016, he lost to BJP's Debananda Hazarika, and in 2021, he was defeated by BJP's Amiya Kumar Bhuyan. In a striking reversal, Borah has now joined the BJP and been awarded the party ticket, which was previously denied to the man who defeated him four years ago.

Reflecting on his move, Borah stated, "The people of Bihpuria know my work and my commitment to this region. I believe this is the right party to serve them better."

Voter Concerns: Floods, Erosion, and Infrastructure Issues

Beyond the political drama, voters in Bihpuria continue to grapple with pressing local issues. The constituency faces recurring floods, severe river erosion, and poor road infrastructure that hampers connectivity across the area.

Gautam Hazarika, a voter from the constituency, expressed frustration, saying, "Elections come and go, but our roads remain broken and our villages keep getting swallowed by the river. We want someone who will actually fix these problems."

Why Bihpuria is a Gripping Electoral Contest

With Borah's dramatic defection, a slighted sitting MLA, and a first-time Congress challenger eager to upset the odds, Bihpuria promises to be among the most gripping contests on Assam's electoral map. The battle highlights not only personal political journeys but also the critical need for addressing local development challenges.
