Ex-CPM Leader Says LDF Won't Get Third Term, Praises UDF

Former CPM Leader Forecasts LDF Defeat in Kerala, Lauds UDF Backing

In a significant political development, former Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader G Sudhakaran has asserted that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the Left Democratic Front (LDF) will not achieve a third consecutive term in office. Sudhakaran attributes this predicted outcome to what he describes as the Left party's "political failure," while simultaneously highlighting the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) as poised for victory.

Sudhakaran's Stance Shift and Independent Candidacy

Sudhakaran articulated this position through a detailed Facebook post, following his acceptance of UDF support to contest as an independent candidate in the Ambalappuzha constituency. This marks a notable reversal from his earlier statements. Previously, when announcing his candidacy after departing from the CPM, Sudhakaran had expressed that he would be "happy" if Vijayan returned to power for a third time—a remark that reportedly displeased Congress leaders.

However, in his Thursday social media update, Sudhakaran clarified and solidified his new stance. He extended gratitude to Congress party workers who are diligently campaigning for him in Ambalappuzha, emphasizing their sincere and robust efforts. The former leader explicitly stated that the CPM leadership has faltered politically, creating a context where the opposition, particularly the Congress leadership, is seen as succeeding.

Decades of Experience and Reasons for Departure

Reflecting on his extensive political career, Sudhakaran noted, "Having worked for over six decades with the communist movement as both a member and part of the leadership, I am now in a situation where I cannot continue political work fearlessly and honestly." He explained that his decision to run as an independent in Ambalappuzha stems from a principled stand against corrupt individuals and those engaged in manipulative, criminal-mafia politics.

He accused the LDF leadership of continuously disseminating false propaganda against him. Despite these efforts, Sudhakaran claimed that his direct interactions with the public reveal that these campaigns have not swayed voters. "Among them, hundreds of UDF workers and numerous party members from the Left, especially the CPM, along with tens of thousands of voters, have declared their support for my victory," he asserted.

A Historic Political Struggle

Sudhakaran framed his candidacy as a historic struggle to promote genuine politics in the face of threats, false campaigns, and character assassinations. He contrasted the LDF's approach with that of the UDF, stating, "At this crucial historical juncture, when the LDF leadership came forward publicly with insults, slander and false propaganda, the wise stance of the Congress-led UDF, which offered words of comfort and support, will be etched as a silver line in history."

This development underscores the evolving political dynamics in Kerala, with a seasoned leader publicly predicting the LDF's electoral decline while aligning with opposition support for his independent bid. Sudhakaran's comments highlight internal criticisms within the Left and potential shifts in voter sentiment as the state approaches future elections.
