Prashant Jagtap Switches from NCP (SP) to Congress, Boosts Alliance in Pune
Ex-Pune Mayor Jagtap Joins Congress, Cites Ideology

In a significant development for Maharashtra's political landscape, Prashant Jagtap, the Pune city chief of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar), officially joined the Congress party on Friday. The switch occurred in Mumbai, with the state's top Congress leaders, including state Congress chief Harshwardhan Sapkal and Congress legislature party leader Vijay Wadettiwar, presiding over the event.

Ideological Stance Behind the Switch

Jagtap, a former mayor of Pune, explained his decision by highlighting his commitment to ideology. He stated that he had initially stayed with Sharad Pawar after the party's split last year due to shared principles, a choice that he claimed led to a difficult period for him from the faction led by Ajit Pawar. His departure from the NCP (SP) came shortly after party leader Supriya Sule hinted at a potential local alliance in Pune between her party and her cousin Ajit Pawar's NCP.

Congress leaders framed Jagtap's induction as a victory for ideological politics. "Parties function on ideology, and Congress is fighting this ideological battle with sincerity and determination," asserted Harshwardhan Sapkal. He contrasted this with parties he accused of being focused solely on power and amassing wealth through corrupt means to win elections. Wadettiwar emphasized that Jagtap had taken a firm stand against aligning with what he termed "communal forces."

Boost for Congress in Complex Pune Equations

The move provides a much-needed boost to the Congress's prospects in Pune. The party had been facing uncertainty regarding its alliance with the NCP (SP) in the city, especially after holding separate discussions with the Ajit Pawar-led NCP. In a scenario where Congress allied with the NCP (SP), its role in Pune was expected to be limited due to its relatively weaker organizational presence compared to its partner.

Jagtap's entry into the Congress fold strengthens the party's local leadership and could alter the seat-sharing dynamics. Furthermore, the Congress is simultaneously engaged in negotiations with the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA), which has reportedly demanded over 50 seats to contest in the Pune region, adding another layer of complexity to the pre-election calculations.

Congress Celebrates Local Poll Success

The event in Mumbai was not solely focused on Jagtap's induction. The Congress leadership also took the opportunity to felicitate its recently elected representatives from local bodies. The ceremony at Tilak Bhavan in Dadar honored the party's 41 newly elected municipal presidents and 1,006 corporators who succeeded in the recently concluded municipal and nagar panchayat elections across Maharashtra.

This dual-purpose gathering underscored the party's efforts to consolidate its grassroots strength while strategically poaching influential leaders from alliance partners to fortify its position ahead of crucial electoral battles. The defection of a prominent local figure like Jagtap is seen as a tactical gain that could influence the political arithmetic in the key urban centre of Pune.
