Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis Addresses Serious Allegations in Astrologer Rape Case
In a significant development in the Maharashtra state assembly, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis responded to mounting pressure from the Opposition regarding the investigation into astrologer Ashok Kharat, who faces severe accusations of raping and molesting women. Fadnavis emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that the government is committed to taking decisive action, even against individuals with remote connections to the case.
Fadnavis Condemns Assault on Women's Dignity
During the assembly session on Monday, Fadnavis described the incident as an assault on the dignity of women, highlighting that Kharat allegedly misused his influence to deceive vulnerable women. The Chief Minister announced his intention to deliver a comprehensive statement on the case the following day, underscoring the government's resolve to address the issue transparently.
Fadnavis provided details on the police investigation, revealing that authorities had set a trap for Kharat. He noted the challenges in the probe, as few women initially came forward to file complaints. However, he expressed optimism that with the process now underway, more victims might feel empowered to step forward and seek justice.
Opposition Demands Broader Investigation into Officials
The Opposition, led by Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar, escalated demands for a more extensive inquiry. Wadettiwar called for ministers, IAS, and IPS officers who supported Kharat to be named as co-accused in the case. He alleged that three senior officials had convened at a hotel in Nasik to strategize on shielding Kharat from legal consequences.
Echoing these concerns, Shiv Sena UBT's Bhaskar Jadhav suggested that public representatives across party lines, along with ministers and high-ranking officials, could be implicated in the scandal. These statements reflect growing calls for accountability beyond the primary accused, pointing to potential systemic issues in the handling of the case.
Government's Commitment to Justice and Transparency
Fadnavis reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring justice for the victims, promising that no stone would be left unturned in the investigation. The case has sparked widespread public outrage, with many demanding swift and fair legal proceedings to restore trust in the system.
As the investigation progresses, all eyes are on the Maharashtra government to deliver on its promises and address the serious allegations with the urgency they deserve. The coming days are expected to bring further developments as more details emerge from the ongoing probe.
