Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis Vows Priority Funds for Pune Road Land Acquisition
In a significant move to address traffic congestion in Pune, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Thursday that the state government will release funds for land acquisition on a priority basis to expedite road construction in the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) and Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) limits. This commitment came during a discussion in the Maharashtra legislative assembly, where the issue of pending road works was highlighted.
Traffic Woes Spark Assembly Debate
The discussion was initiated by BJP MLA Mahesh Landge from Bhosari, who pointed out the severe traffic snarls plaguing PCMC areas. Landge emphasized that over 60,000 new vehicles were added to the region's count during the last Diwali season, exacerbating congestion due to an inadequate road network. He stressed that several key projects, including the Pune-Nashik road and ring road, have been sanctioned but remain stalled due to incomplete land acquisition.
"Unless the entire land acquisition happens, there will not be a complete road network in the PCMC areas, and residents will continue to suffer from traffic congestion," Landge stated, urging the government to implement a time-bound program to acquire land and complete these projects within deadlines.
Government's Response and Action Plan
In response, Chief Minister Fadnavis acknowledged the importance of these projects and assured the assembly of swift action. "These are some of the important projects, and the state government will give funds to acquire land for these. I will personally hold a meeting to discuss the issue with the officials concerned and ensure that funds are released at the earliest," he said.
Fadnavis also noted that while the state will provide financial support, the PCMC will need to arrange some funds internally. The government plans to direct the civic administration to make necessary arrangements to facilitate this process.
Traffic Plan for PMRDA Areas
Adding to the government's initiatives, Minister of State for Urban Development Madhuri Misal informed the assembly that a traffic plan is being prepared for PMRDA areas to ease movement. She clarified that the cancellation of PMRDA's development plan will not significantly affect road work, as strategic planning is underway.
"The chief minister told the authorities to carry out strategic planning. Accordingly, 24 metres and 18 metres wide roads are being proposed. The work for the traffic plan has already been undertaken," Misal explained, indicating proactive steps to improve infrastructure.
Broader Implications for Pune's Development
This development underscores the government's focus on enhancing urban infrastructure in Pune, a city grappling with rapid urbanization and increasing vehicle numbers. The priority funding for land acquisition is expected to:
- Accelerate the completion of critical road projects.
- Alleviate daily traffic congestion for residents.
- Support economic growth by improving connectivity.
- Set a precedent for timely execution of public works in Maharashtra.
As the state moves forward with these plans, residents and stakeholders will be watching closely to ensure that the promised funds translate into tangible progress on the ground, ultimately leading to a more efficient and less congested road network in the Pune region.
