Farmer Leader P R Pandian Freed on Bail After HC Stays 13-Year Sentence
Farmer Leader Pandian Released on Bail by Madras HC

In a significant development, prominent farmer leader P R Pandian has walked out of Trichy Central Prison after the Madras High Court granted him bail and stayed his 13-year imprisonment sentence. Pandian, the general secretary of the Tamil Nadu Cauvery Farmers Protection Association, was released on Tuesday, marking a temporary relief in a long-standing legal battle.

Court Intervenes, Stays Controversial Sentence

The Madras High Court's decision to stay the sentence comes just weeks after Pandian, along with former panchayat president A Selvaraj, was convicted. On December 6, the additional mahila court in Tiruvarur had sentenced the two men to a combined 13 years in prison. The case stemmed from an incident on June 16, 2015, when protesters vandalized an ONGC exploration site at Kariyamangalam in the Kottur block of Tiruvarur district. Notably, the same trial court acquitted 20 other individuals accused in the case.

"A Conspiracy Against Farmers": Pandian's Allegation

Addressing the media immediately after his release in Trichy, Pandian did not mince words. He framed his incarceration as a politically motivated move designed to suppress farmers' voices. He claimed his imprisonment was "deliberately engineered to advance corporate agendas aimed at seizing control of the Cauvery delta region."

Expressing gratitude to fellow farmers and supporters who rallied against the verdict, Pandian emphasized the symbolic nature of the punishment. "This imprisonment was not merely for the two of us, but for the entire farming community," he stated. "It is a penalty imposed to benefit corporations seeking to appropriate the Cauvery delta region." His statement underscores the deep-seated tensions between agricultural communities and industrial projects in the fertile delta.

Farmers' Bodies Rally, Issue Warning to State Government

The release was met with celebrations from farmers' associations. P Ayyakannu, president of the National South Indian Rivers Interlinking Farmers Association, was present to greet Pandian. Ayyakannu strongly defended the right to protest, calling it a fundamental democratic right of farmers.

He used the occasion to issue a direct appeal to the state government. Ayyakannu called on Chief Minister M K Stalin to drop all cases registered against farmers across Tamil Nadu for holding demonstrations on various issues. He coupled this appeal with a warning, indicating that renewed and intensified protests could erupt across the state if this demand is not met. This sets the stage for potential fresh agitations, keeping the issue of farmers' rights at the forefront of the state's political discourse.

The legal reprieve for Pandian is likely to galvanize the farmers' movement in the region, even as the core legal case remains pending before the higher court. The incident highlights the ongoing conflict between resource extraction projects, state policy, and the rights of agricultural communities protecting their land and water resources.
