Farmers continue protest for 23 days
Farmers in Fazilka district have been protesting for 23 consecutive days against the construction of an embankment along the Sutlej river. The protest, which began on June 12, has seen hundreds of farmers gathering daily at Noorshah village to voice their opposition.
Meeting with the Governor
On Saturday, a delegation of farmers met with the Governor of Punjab at Raj Bhavan in Chandigarh. The delegation, led by farmer union leaders, submitted a memorandum detailing their concerns. According to the farmers, the embankment would submerge their agricultural land and disrupt irrigation channels.
Details of the protest
The protest has been peaceful, with farmers setting up a temporary camp at the proposed construction site. They have been demanding that the state government halt the project and conduct a proper environmental impact assessment. The embankment is part of a flood control project by the Punjab Irrigation Department.
Government response
The Governor assured the farmers that their concerns would be looked into and forwarded to the state government. However, no immediate decision was announced. The farmers have vowed to continue their protest until the project is scrapped.
Impact on local community
The prolonged protest has affected daily life in the region, with road blockades leading to traffic disruptions. Local shopkeepers have reported a drop in business. The farmers remain determined, stating that their livelihoods are at stake.
