With the Kerala assembly elections approaching, the Fraternity of Residents' Associations Thiruvananthapuram (FRAT) has issued a strong appeal to all major political fronts. On Wednesday, the association called upon the Left Democratic Front (LDF), United Democratic Front (UDF), and National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to place comprehensive development of the capital district at the very center of their electoral agendas and manifestos.
Detailed Memorandum Outlines Transformative Demands
In a comprehensive memorandum submitted to front conveners and allied party leaders, FRAT has outlined a series of long-pending demands aimed at transforming Thiruvananthapuram into a modern, well-planned urban hub. The association stressed that political parties must move beyond mere promises and take concrete actions to substantially improve the lives of citizens, according to FRAT patron Paraniyam Devakumar.
Key Recommendations for Structural Development
A dedicated ministerial portfolio for capital district development stands as a key recommendation to ensure focused planning and efficient execution of critical projects. The association emphasized the urgent need to fast-track essential infrastructure works, particularly the Karamana–Kaliyikkavila Road widening project under NH 66, which has faced significant delays.
FRAT has reiterated longstanding demands for the establishment of an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the state capital to enhance healthcare infrastructure. Additionally, the association advocates for a high court bench in Thiruvananthapuram to decentralize judicial services and improve access to justice for residents across southern Kerala.
Urban Development and Economic Growth Initiatives
The residents' association strongly urged political parties to actively push for upgrading Thiruvananthapuram into a metro city, citing its rapidly growing information technology ecosystem led by Technopark. This designation would unlock additional resources and development opportunities for the region.
The immediate completion and full operationalization of Vizhinjam International Seaport, along with supporting road and rail infrastructure, was highlighted as absolutely vital for boosting international trade, creating employment opportunities, and positioning Kerala as a major maritime hub in the region.
Addressing Critical Civic Concerns
The memorandum also featured several pressing civic concerns that directly impact residents' daily lives:
- Tackling the increasing stray dog menace through humane and effective population management programs
- Ensuring piped natural gas (PNG) connections to all households for cleaner and more affordable energy
- Developing the proposed Attukal township project to address housing needs and urban expansion
- Implementing permanent solutions for chronic waterlogging in low-lying areas during monsoon seasons
- Expanding rooftop solar initiatives to promote renewable energy adoption
- Establishing a scientific, decentralized waste management system for both biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste
