Fuel Panic Sweeps Vidarbha Districts Amid Social Media Misinformation
Panic buying and long queues disrupted fuel stations across multiple districts in Maharashtra's Vidarbha region on Tuesday, despite official assurances of ample petrol and diesel stocks. The sudden surge in demand, driven by misinformation circulating on social media, sparked chaos, traffic jams, and heightened public anxiety in Wardha, Chandrapur, and Yavatmal.
Chaos and Congestion in Chandrapur and Wardha
In Chandrapur, rumors of an impending fuel shortage triggered extensive crowding at petrol pumps, leading to visible public distress. Officials quickly clarified that supply chains remain fully operational, with no actual shortage in the district. "The stock position is adequate, and replenishment is taking place regularly. There is no cause for concern," reiterated senior authorities, attributing the rush to baseless fears spread online.
Similarly, Wardha witnessed a sudden influx of motorists at pumps in key areas like Bajaj Chowk, Aarti Chowk, and Shanti Nagar, causing significant traffic disruptions. The unexpected crowds created tense situations, with staff overwhelmed by demand. Police intervention was necessary to manage congestion and restore order. The district administration later confirmed that fuel supplies in Wardha are sufficient and uninterrupted.
Yavatmal Faces Price Hikes and Supply Fears
Long queues also formed outside fuel stations and gas agencies in Yavatmal city, Wani, and Pusad, as citizens feared potential supply disruptions. This panic has begun to affect local markets, with noticeable price increases in vegetables and edible oils. Additionally, residents in Amravati reported shortages of domestic LPG cylinders, though vehicle fuel availability remains stable. Saurabh Jagtap, secretary of the Amravati District Petrol Dealers Association, emphasized that there is no scarcity of petrol or diesel in the city, with pumps operating normally.
Akola and Buldhana Remain Unaffected
In contrast, Akola city and nearby areas experienced smooth operations at petrol pumps on Tuesday, with adequate supplies of both petrol and diesel and no signs of panic buying. However, a noticeable increase in footfall was observed at LPG filling stations, particularly among auto-rickshaw drivers and LPG-powered vehicles. Neighboring Buldhana district also reported no disruptions, with fuel and LPG supplies flowing without incident and no reports of crowding or panic.
The incident highlights how social media rumors can swiftly lead to public unrest, even in the absence of real shortages. Officials urge citizens to rely on verified information and avoid spreading unconfirmed reports to prevent such chaotic scenarios in the future.
