Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Demands Action Over Delayed Local Body Elections
In a significant development, former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has made a fervent appeal to the President of India and the Governor of Rajasthan to intervene regarding the prolonged delay in conducting panchayat and urban local body elections across the state. Gehlot raised this critical issue during a media briefing held at his Civil Lines residence in Jaipur on Tuesday, highlighting what he described as a blatant violation of constitutional mandates.
Constitutional Mandate and Court Directives Ignored
Gehlot emphasized that the Constitution of India, meticulously framed by Dr. B R Ambedkar, explicitly requires timely elections for all democratic institutions, including panchayats, municipal bodies, and cooperatives. He pointed out that despite clear directions from both the Supreme Court and the Rajasthan High Court, along with established April deadlines, these crucial elections have not been scheduled or conducted.
The former chief minister accused the current ruling dispensation of hypocrisy, noting that while they celebrate Ambedkar's birth anniversary with great fanfare, they simultaneously fail to uphold the fundamental principles of democracy and constitutional governance that he championed. This contradiction, according to Gehlot, undermines the very essence of Ambedkar's legacy.
Democratic Institutions Under Threat
Citing recent remarks by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Gehlot elaborated that growing concerns about safeguarding the Constitution are directly linked to the perceived weakening of key democratic institutions. He specifically mentioned the judiciary and investigative agencies as examples of institutions facing challenges, suggesting that the delay in local body elections is part of a broader pattern eroding democratic norms.
"The situation is extremely serious and demands immediate attention," Gehlot stated, stressing that the continuous postponement of these elections not only violates legal and constitutional provisions but also deprives citizens of their right to local representation and governance.
Call for Presidential and Gubernatorial Intervention
Gehlot called upon the President and the Governor to exercise their constitutional authority to ensure that elections are conducted without further delay. He argued that it is their duty to uphold the rule of law and protect democratic processes from being undermined by administrative inaction or political maneuvering.
Furthermore, Gehlot questioned the moral authority of the state government to continue in office if it fails to comply with court orders and constitutional mandates regarding the timely holding of elections.
