Goa Forward Party Pledges Support to Congress for Ponda Byelection
The Goa Forward Party (GFP) has officially declared its backing for the Congress candidate Ketan Bhatikar in the upcoming Ponda byelection. This decision was made during a meeting of the party's state executive committee, emphasizing a commitment to the spirit of the alliance with the Congress party.
Strategic Alliance and Campaign Efforts
In a statement, GFP General Secretary Mohandas Lolienkar clarified the party's stance: "In keeping with the alliance spirit, we have decided not to contest the Ponda election. We are with Congress in 2027, and that is why our party workers and leaders will campaign against the BJP in Ponda." This move underscores the GFP's dedication to a unified opposition front against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Expansion Plans and Clarifications
The party has also outlined plans to strengthen its presence in 25-30 constituencies across Goa. However, the executive committee was quick to clarify that this does not imply the GFP will contest all these seats in the 2027 assembly elections. Instead, it aims to build a robust organizational base to enhance the alliance's overall strength.
Organizational Secretary Durgadas Kamat explained the rationale behind this expansion: "We want to strengthen the party because only if we strengthen the party will the alliance be strengthened, and if the alliance is strengthened, then the opposition will be strengthened, and we will be able to form the government in the coming elections."
Future Electoral Strategy
Decisions on which specific constituencies to contest in 2027 will be made after further discussions with the Congress party. This collaborative approach highlights the GFP's focus on maintaining a cohesive opposition strategy to challenge the BJP effectively.
Upcoming Mega Public Meeting
In addition to electoral plans, the GFP has announced a mega public meeting at Lohia Maidan on May 30. This event will commemorate Statehood Day and mark 10 years since the party's formation, serving as a platform to rally support and showcase its growing influence in Goan politics.
The GFP's announcements signal a strategic shift towards consolidating the opposition alliance, with the Ponda byelection serving as a critical test of this partnership ahead of the 2027 state elections.
