Goa Political Landscape Heats Up as Former Deputy CM Announces Comeback
In a development that has sent ripples through Goa's political circles, former deputy chief minister and BJP's former Pernem MLA Manohar 'Babu' Ajgaonkar has declared his intention to return to active politics in the Pernem constituency. The announcement, made during the inauguration of his new constituency office in Mapusa, has sparked immediate and sharp reactions within the ruling BJP-led alliance camp.
Ajgaonkar's Critique of Current Leadership
Ajgaonkar, who had shifted to Margao to contest the 2022 assembly elections, launched a scathing critique of the current Pernem MLA Pravin Arlekar's tenure. He asserted that the constituency has regressed by approximately five years due to what he termed as "inaction" and lack of developmental progress under Arlekar's leadership.
"I have unfinished work in Pernem," Ajgaonkar declared, pledging to complete various developmental projects that he had initiated during his previous tenure. Expressing confidence in his political future, he stated that he believes the party will field him as their candidate in the upcoming elections.
Alliance Members React Sharply
The announcement triggered immediate pushback from within the BJP alliance. Current Pernem MLA Pravin Arlekar questioned Ajgaonkar's motives, suggesting the timing and nature of his announcement raised concerns about political opportunism.
More pointed criticism came from Mandrem MLA Jit Arolkar, who labeled Ajgaonkar a "retired politician" who should "return to the pavilion" rather than attempting a political comeback. Arolkar's comments reflected the internal tensions that Ajgaonkar's announcement has exposed within the ruling coalition.
Ajgaonkar Fires Back at Critics
Unfazed by the criticism, Ajgaonkar dismissed the remarks from his political opponents as signs of insecurity and launched counter-allegations against Mandrem MLA Jit Arolkar. The former deputy chief minister specifically raised concerns about land conversion practices in the taluka, adding another layer of controversy to the already heated political exchange.
Strong Public Response to Office Opening
The inauguration of Ajgaonkar's new constituency office witnessed a significant public turnout, indicating substantial local support for the former MLA's political resurgence. During the event, Ajgaonkar made a commitment to be available daily at the office to address public grievances, positioning himself as an accessible alternative to the current representation.
This development marks a significant shift in Goa's political dynamics, particularly in the northern region of the state. The public confrontation between former and current BJP alliance members suggests potential realignments and internal challenges for the ruling coalition as they approach future electoral contests.
