Goa Government Revises Fuel Container Ban with Key Exemptions
In a significant policy adjustment, the Goa government has partially relaxed its recent ban on the sale of fuel in jerry cans and plastic containers. This revision, announced just a day after the initial directive, specifically exempts fishermen, educational institutions, and diesel generator operators from the restrictions, provided they adhere to strict safety protocols.
Revised Orders Issued by District Collectors
District collectors across Goa issued updated orders on Saturday, modifying the sweeping ban imposed on Friday. The South Goa collector, Egna Cleetus, clarified that the restrictions will no longer apply to the sale and use of petrol or diesel for verified purposes related to fishing activities, fishing vessels, other navigation vessels, educational institutions, and diesel generator sets.
"The restrictions imposed shall not apply to the sale and use of petrol or diesel for the purposes, subject to due verification and adherence to safety norms, of fishermen and fishing-related activities, fishing vessels and other navigation vessels, educational institutions, and use in diesel generator sets," stated Cleetus in the official order.
Background and Rationale for the Ban
The government's original decision to prohibit fuel sales in containers was implemented on Friday in response to widespread panic buying reported across many parts of the state. This surge in demand had raised concerns about public safety and potential fuel shortages.
