Former Justice Rebello Slams Goa Speaker Over Farmland Bill Rejection

In a significant development, former chief justice of the Allahabad High Court, Ferdino Rebello, has expressed strong disapproval of the Goa legislative assembly speaker's decision to reject a bill aimed at protecting agricultural land. The bill was submitted by five political parties seeking to safeguard ecologically sensitive areas, including paddy fields, from unplanned conversions.

Public Meeting Highlights Ecological Concerns

Rebello addressed a public gathering in Canacona on Sunday under the banner 'Enough is Enough', where he emphasized the urgent need to preserve Goa's remaining agricultural lands. He stated that it is unfortunate the speaker declined to allow the bill, which could have provided legal protection against rampant land degradation.

Rebello declared his support for the people of Goa, promising to stand with them if a statewide agitation emerges against unplanned land conversions. He urged residents of Canacona to participate actively in the movement, highlighting that ecological degradation will only cease with united public opposition.

Success Stories and Community Resistance

Speakers at the meeting referenced successful community-led protests, such as the opposition by Chimbel residents to the Unity Mall project. They also cited protests in the St Andre constituency, led by the RG group, against land conversions under Section 39A of the TCP Act. These examples were used to inspire and mobilize support for the current cause.

Rebello's call to action underscores growing environmental activism in Goa, as concerns mount over the loss of agricultural and ecologically vital lands. The movement seeks to pressure authorities into reconsidering land use policies and prioritizing sustainable development.
