In the politically rich landscape of Assam, the Golaghat assembly constituency is gearing up for a rematch that encapsulates decades of electoral history and personal rivalries. This high-profile contest pits incumbent state finance minister and BJP MLA Ajanta Neog against Congress challenger Bitupan Saikia, with Independent candidate Rubul Borah as the sole other contender. Ajanta Neog's Unparalleled Electoral Legacy
Ajanta Neog, aged 62, boasts an extraordinary electoral record, having won the Golaghat seat five consecutive times in 2001, 2006, 2011, 2016, and 2021. This achievement makes her the longest-serving female MLA in Assam's history. Her career is marked by a unique political journey, having secured victories under both the Congress and BJP banners. She won her first four terms as a Congress candidate before switching to the BJP and triumphing again in 2021.
Her political lineage is deeply entrenched in Assam's history. Her mother, Rebati Das of the Congress, made history as the first-ever MLA of the Jalukbari assembly constituency in 1972, a seat currently held by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Ajanta's husband, Nagen Neog, was a two-time Congress MLA from Golaghat, winning in 1983 and 1991, and served as a minister before his tragic death at the hands of Ulfa militants in 1996. Collectively, the Neog family has secured seven of the eleven assembly elections held in Golaghat, with Ajanta contributing five wins and Nagen two, establishing an impressive political dynasty.
The Role Reversal and Electoral Dynamics
The current rivalry between Ajanta Neog and Bitupan Saikia stems from a notable political role reversal. In the 2016 elections, Ajanta, then a Congress candidate, defeated Bitupan of the BJP by a margin of 5,213 votes, with Ajanta polling 73,862 votes against Bitupan's 68,649. Both candidates subsequently switched parties, leading to the 2021 face-off where Ajanta, now representing the BJP, defeated Bitupan, now the Congress candidate, by a wider margin of 9,325 votes, garnering 81,651 votes to Bitupan's 72,326.
Reflecting on her sustained success, Ajanta Neog stated, "Golaghat has always judged me by my work, not by the party symbol I carry. That trust is what I have spent every term trying to honour." Her tenure is visibly marked by significant infrastructural development, particularly in road networks, which are widely regarded as among the finest in Assam. As a former PWD minister, she emphasized, "The roads in Golaghat speak for themselves. Development is not a promise here — it is a reality that people can see, use and feel every day."
Challenges and Historical Context
Despite these achievements, the constituency faces persistent challenges, notably severe river erosion caused by the Dhansiri River. This issue has displaced families and damaged agricultural land, remaining a critical concern for residents that requires ongoing attention.
Historically, Golaghat has been a Congress stronghold, with the party winning six of the eleven elections held in the constituency. The AGP has secured two victories, while the BJP, Janata Party, and Socialist Party have each won once.
