Gujarat Government Reports Significant Revenue from Hotel Liquor Sales
The Gujarat state government has disclosed substantial earnings from the sale of alcohol at permitted liquor shops in hotels across Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. In a written reply presented to the assembly on Wednesday, the government confirmed that it generated revenue of Rs 116.39 crore over the past two years from these establishments.
Details of Permitted Hotels and Revenue Figures
According to the government's response to a question posed by Jamalpur-Khadia Congress MLA Imran Khedawala, a total of 32 hotels in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar have been granted permits to sell alcohol. The revenue collected from these permit shops amounted to Rs 116,39,62,900 during the specified two-year period, highlighting a significant contribution to the state's coffers.
Surge in New Liquor Permit Applications
Earlier in the week, during Question Hour, the Gujarat government provided additional insights into the growing demand for liquor permits. The number of applications for new liquor permits in Ahmedabad alone increased by a staggering 227% in just one year. Specifically, between January 21, 2024, and January 20, 2025, there were 292 new applications, while from January 1, 2025, to January 20, 2026, this number skyrocketed to 956 new applications.
This sharp rise indicates a notable shift in the market dynamics and consumer behavior in the region. The data underscores the economic impact of alcohol sales through regulated channels, contributing to state revenue while adhering to permit guidelines.
The government's disclosure sheds light on the financial benefits derived from controlled alcohol sales in urban areas like Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. As the number of applications continues to climb, it may prompt further discussions on policy adjustments and revenue management strategies in the future.
