Haryana Assembly Descends into Chaos Over Rajya Sabha Election Controversy
The Haryana legislative assembly witnessed unprecedented turmoil on Tuesday as a bitter dispute over alleged misconduct during recent Rajya Sabha elections triggered multiple adjournments and culminated in a mass walkout by the opposition Congress party. The 12th budget session was completely derailed by intense verbal clashes between Congress and BJP lawmakers, with accusations of "money and muscle power" influencing voting outcomes.
Zero Hour Flashpoint Ignites Political Firestorm
The confrontation erupted early in the sitting when Congress MLA Geeta Bhukkal attempted to raise pressing concerns regarding cross-voting and invalid ballots in the Rajya Sabha polls. Although Speaker Harvinder Kalyan initially persuaded the opposition to exercise patience, tensions boiled over dramatically during the Zero Hour proceedings.
Led by former chief minister and current Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Congress members demanded an immediate formal discussion on the controversial Rajya Sabha elections. Hooda vehemently asserted that the "arbitrary" decision to declare certain votes invalid, coupled with alleged financial inducements, had "profoundly let down the state of Haryana" and undermined democratic principles.
Personal Attacks and Accusations Fly Across the Aisle
The debate rapidly deteriorated into personal attacks as Treasury benches mounted a fierce counter-offensive against the allegations. In a provocative retort, government ministers Krishan Bedi and Gaurav Gautam taunted Hooda, sarcastically challenging him to identify the "nine black sheep" within his own party ranks who allegedly engaged in cross-voting.
Congress MLAs retaliated by branding the government "vote chor" (vote thieves), while BJP members shot back with the phrase "chor machaye shor" (the thief makes the most noise), escalating the verbal warfare and deepening the political rift.
Double Adjournments and Bizarre 'Dancing' Gestures
The speaker was compelled to halt proceedings twice as the chamber descended into complete disorder. The first adjournment, a 15-minute break, was called after Congress MLAs stormed the well of the house in protest. A second adjournment for lunch was declared following continued disruptions during a speech by Kalka MLA Shakti Rani Sharma.
The friction took an unusual turn when the house resumed. Hooda accused Minister Krishan Bedi of making "dancing gestures" to mock the opposition, with the former chief minister reportedly mimicking these movements to the speaker to illustrate his complaint, adding a surreal element to the already charged atmosphere.
Final Walkout and Unresolved Dispute
The session concluded without any resolution to the bitter dispute. As Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini rose to deliver his reply to the budget discussion, the entire Congress cohort staged a final, dramatic walkout, maintaining their steadfast protest over what they termed the Rajya Sabha "wrongs."
Speaker Harvinder Kalyan has urgently appealed to both sides to uphold parliamentary decorum, but the profound divide over the election controversy suggests significant volatility may persist throughout the remaining days of the budget session, casting a shadow over legislative proceedings in Haryana.
