Haryana Procurement Controversy Escalates Amid Opposition and Farmer Backlash
The political row surrounding procurement norms in Haryana has intensified significantly, with opposition parties and prominent farmer leaders launching a fierce attack on the Nayab Singh Saini-led government. The controversy erupted over recent changes to the state's agricultural procurement system, which the chief minister has staunchly defended as essential reforms aimed at enhancing transparency and accountability.
Government's Defense of Procurement Reforms
Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has categorically accused opposition parties of "spreading misinformation" about the procurement system. He emphasized that the government's reforms are designed to make the entire process more transparent, accountable, and ultimately farmer-friendly. "The government is committed to procuring every single grain of farmers' produce," Saini declared during a recent statement.
To implement these changes, the administration has appointed nodal officers in every mandi (agricultural market) across Haryana. Senior officials are actively monitoring procurement operations throughout all districts, with deputy commissioners taking direct charge of procurement arrangements. Ministers and Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) are conducting regular visits to mandis to review the arrangements firsthand.
Saini made a specific appeal to commission agents, urging them to cooperate "above political motives" to ensure smooth procurement operations during this critical agricultural season.
Opposition and Farmer Leaders Intensify Criticism
Despite the government's assurances, the Congress and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) have significantly escalated their criticism of the new procurement procedures. They have highlighted numerous issues related to biometric verification and other formalities that farmers must complete before selling their produce.
INLD leaders Abhay Chautala and Ram Pal Majra announced plans to visit mandis in protest, alleging that even seriously ill and elderly farmers are being compelled to undergo biometric verification processes. The Congress party has similarly directed its MLAs to visit grain markets across the state to ensure farmers do not face unnecessary inconvenience during the procurement season.
Farmer leader Suresh Koth offered particularly sharp criticism, stating, "Farmers have to undergo biometric tests to sell their produce after working day and night in the fields." This sentiment reflects growing frustration among agricultural communities who view the new requirements as burdensome additional hurdles.
Government Reiterates Stand After Cabinet Meeting
Following a cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Saini reiterated the government's position, asserting that the new measures are specifically designed to curb unauthorized activities within the procurement system.
