Himachal Pradesh Government Takes Strong Stand Against Drug Menace in Panchayat Elections

In a decisive move to combat the escalating drug crisis, the Himachal Pradesh state government has resolved to prohibit individuals implicated in heroin, locally known as chitta, trafficking from participating in the upcoming panchayat elections. This landmark decision was finalized during a Cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu in Shimla. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to address the rampant drug abuse that has ensnared many youths, particularly in remote regions of the state.

Approval of Panchayati Raj Amendment Bill, 2026

The Cabinet greenlit a draft of the Panchayati Raj Amendment Bill, 2026, which will soon be introduced in the state Assembly. This legislative step underscores the government's commitment to cleansing the political landscape at the grassroots level by excluding those involved in narcotics trade. The chitta problem has become increasingly pervasive, with recent incidents revealing the involvement of government employees, including four police personnel who were dismissed for drug trafficking activities.

Other Key Decisions from the Cabinet Meeting

Beyond the anti-drug measures, the Cabinet addressed several other critical issues. It reaffirmed the indirect election system for chairmen and vice-chairmen of municipal councils and nagar panchayats, opting against any changes after extensive deliberations. In the education sector, the government approved the appointment of 2,068 teachers across 151 CBSE schools statewide, aiming to bolster the quality of education.

Healthcare infrastructure also received a boost with the establishment of a bio-physics department in medical colleges located in Hamirpur, Nerchowk, and IGMC Shimla. Additionally, the Cabinet endorsed a report recommending the relocation of Nahan Medical College outside the city to enhance its facilities and accessibility.

Addressing LPG Supply Concerns Amid Global Tensions

In response to potential LPG shortages triggered by the ongoing conflict in West Asia, the government has decided to facilitate petroleum companies in laying pipelines for LPG supply. This proactive measure aims to ensure uninterrupted access to essential fuel for residents. The Cabinet also held an informal discussion on the recently imposed entry tax, examining all aspects without reaching a conclusive decision.

These comprehensive actions reflect the Himachal Pradesh government's multifaceted approach to governance, prioritizing public safety, education, healthcare, and infrastructure amid challenging circumstances.
