Himachal Pradesh Assures Fuel Supply Amid Middle East Conflict Concerns
In response to growing concerns over the impact of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East on global fuel supplies, Himachal Pradesh Chief Secretary Sanjay Gupta on Wednesday offered reassurance, stating that the state currently has nearly 15,000 commercial liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders available for distribution to hotels, restaurants, and other institutions. This announcement came during a high-level review meeting aimed at assessing the availability of essential petroleum products across the hill state.
Review Meeting Highlights Adequate Fuel Stocks
Presiding over the meeting, Chief Secretary Gupta was briefed by officials on the status of petrol, diesel, and both domestic and commercial LPG supplies. While officials noted that the supply of commercial LPG cylinders had been "slightly affected" due to the prevailing international situation, Gupta emphasized that essential institutions such as government and private hospitals, as well as educational facilities, are being given priority to ensure critical services remain uninterrupted.
Gupta clarified that Himachal Pradesh has sufficient stocks of petrol, diesel, and domestic LPG for cooking purposes, urging the public not to worry. He directed officials to maintain uninterrupted availability for consumers and specifically called on domestic LPG users to avoid panic or unnecessary bookings based on misleading social media information. "There is adequate stock of domestic LPG in the state, and consumers should remain patient," he stated.
Enhanced Monitoring and Distribution Measures
To ensure smooth operations, the chief secretary instructed all deputy commissioners to closely monitor the situation and conduct daily reviews of petroleum product and LPG distribution in their respective districts. This proactive approach aims to prevent any disruptions and maintain supply chain efficiency. The meeting was attended by key officials including Additional Chief Secretary R D Nazim and Director of the Food and Civil Supplies Department Ram Kumar Gautam.
Hospitality Sector Faces Challenges
Despite the assurances, the hospitality sector in Himachal Pradesh, encompassing hotels, restaurants, and dhabas, has been experiencing difficulties due to a halt in commercial LPG cylinder supplies. On Tuesday, association members met with the tourism director to request temporary authorisation for using domestic LPG cylinders exclusively for preparing staff meals in hotels.
They also urged coordination with gas companies to secure a limited supply of either domestic or commercial cylinders, enabling establishments to maintain essential food services for guests by reducing menu offerings. The association stressed that such measures are vital to safeguarding the tourism sector, a key economic pillar of the state, from further strain.
Overall, while the Middle East conflict has introduced some supply chain uncertainties, Himachal Pradesh authorities are taking steps to mitigate impacts and ensure fuel availability for both critical services and the public.
