Hubballi's Hosur Cross Grapples with Severe Civic Neglect and Infrastructure Woes
Residents of Hosur Cross in Hubballi are raising alarms over deteriorating civic conditions and infrastructure neglect in areas under Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) ward No. 50. The locality, a vital hub connecting major points like the New Bus Stand, Gokul, and Hubballi Airport, is facing mounting challenges that impact daily life and safety.
Road Conditions and Safety Hazards Escalate
The stretch from PB Road to Colony Road has fallen into disrepair, with damaged surfaces and numerous potholes hindering vehicular movement. A broken manhole cover on PB Road near Hosur has become a critical safety hazard, exposing protruding iron rods that endanger motorists and pedestrians alike. Residents report that the cover is often left open after overflows, compounding the risk of accidents and injuries.
Veeresh Honappannavar, an auto driver, emphasized the severity of the issue: "The manhole cover has been damaged, and the roads have deteriorated significantly. HDMC has failed to address these problems, leaving commuters at risk." Mohan Guled, a local resident, added: "There are high chances of serious injuries here. Pedestrians feel unsafe, and immediate action is needed to replace the cover and ensure smooth pathways."
Empty Sites Transform into Illegal Dumping Grounds
In addition to road woes, several empty sites in Hosur First Cross and Kulkarni Chal have been converted into unauthorized dumping grounds. Garbage accumulation has become rampant, with residents citing irregular door-to-door waste collection as a key factor. Annayya Savanur, a resident of Kulkarni Chal, explained: "The garbage collection vehicle does not visit regularly, leading surrounding houses and hotels to dump waste in empty spaces. We have complained to HDMC multiple times without resolution."
The situation highlights gaps in waste management, with approximately 50 households affected. Dust from ongoing flyover work at Hosur Cross further exacerbates environmental concerns, creating an unhealthy living environment.
HDMC Response and Ongoing Challenges
Basavaraj Jiddi, HDMC Zone-9 assistant commissioner, acknowledged the issues but cited efforts to address them: "We have replaced the manhole cover several times, but it was damaged again recently. It will be fixed soon. Regular door-to-door waste collection is ongoing, and notices will be issued against illegal dumping."
Despite these assurances, residents express frustration over the persistence of problems, noting that the road from PB Road to Vanivilas Vasati Sankirna has been deteriorating for years. The area's commercial significance, including the Hosur regional bus terminal, underscores the urgency for improved maintenance and civic oversight.
As Hosur Cross continues to draw attention for its civic neglect, the community calls for swift action to restore safety, cleanliness, and infrastructure integrity in this key part of Hubballi.
