Hyderabad Chief Minister Unveils Support Package for Lake Encroachment Affected Residents
In a significant announcement on Monday, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy declared that the Congress government will provide comprehensive assistance to the poor impacted by encroachment drives on lake beds and project areas across Hyderabad. The support package includes the provision of 2BHK houses, adequate compensation, and transferable development rights (TDR), aiming to balance urban development with social welfare.
Urging Cooperation for City's Future
Speaking after inaugurating the renovated Nalla Cheruvu lake, which was restored by the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Protection Agency (HYDRAA), Revanth Reddy appealed to residents not to obstruct the city's development. He emphasized the critical need for public cooperation to save Hyderabad, which has been expanding rapidly, with its population reaching 1.34 crore within the Outer Ring Road (ORR).
"Please cooperate to save this city. Future generations will not forgive us if we fail to revive lakes and water bodies, widen roads and nalas, build flyovers, and reduce traffic congestion," the Chief Minister stated, highlighting the long-term consequences of inaction.
Addressing Risks of Encroachments
Warning about the severe risks posed by encroachments, Revanth Reddy explained that while the government does not want the poor to suffer, removing illegal structures from lake beds and the Musi river is essential to prevent flooding and ensure public safety. "This is a ‘pro-poor’ government, and we do not want to cause loss to the poor. But if encroachments remain on lake beds, rainwater will enter houses, washing away appliances and even educational certificates," he cautioned, underscoring the practical dangers faced by residents.
Assurance and Caution to Affected Residents
The Chief Minister assured affected residents that the government is ready to support them, encouraging them to approach him along with their local leaders to discuss their concerns. However, he also cautioned people against being misled by opposition parties and obstructing development works, stressing that such actions could hinder progress.
Recalling initial criticism when HYDRAA was established, Revanth Reddy noted that the positive response from citizens visiting the renovated Nalla Cheruvu lake demonstrates the necessity of such efforts. "All lakes and water bodies will be revived if people cooperate," he affirmed, linking public participation to successful urban renewal.
Musi Rejuvenation and Comparative Advantage
Revanth Reddy also stressed the crucial importance of the Musi rejuvenation project for Hyderabad's future. He pointed out that unlike other major metropolitan cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai, which grapple with severe pollution, flooding, or traffic issues, Hyderabad still has the advantage of addressing these problems early. This proactive approach, he argued, positions the city for sustainable growth.
Government Initiatives and Investments
Highlighting ongoing efforts, the Chief Minister added that the government has already created three police commissionerates in the CURE area and will continue investing in key infrastructure projects. These include lake restoration, road expansion, and flyover construction to support Hyderabad's growth and enhance livability.
The announcement underscores the government's commitment to fostering development while safeguarding the interests of vulnerable communities, setting a precedent for balanced urban planning in India's rapidly expanding cities.
