Tragic Accident on Mumbai-Pune Expressway Claims Lives of Three IIT Bombay Students
A sunrise excursion to Khandala turned into a devastating tragedy for a group of IIT Bombay students when an SUV carrying three of them overturned on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway near the Panvel exit on Thursday morning. The victims have been identified as Shreyansh Sharma (22) from Jaipur, Omkumar Borse (23) from Nashik, and Lay (20) from Nagpur. They were part of a larger group of six students who had departed from the Powai campus around 5 am in three separate SUVs with the intention of witnessing the sunrise.
Details of the Fatal Incident
The accident occurred during their return journey, shortly after the group had crossed the Bhatan tunnel. According to preliminary police reports, the SUV lost control while attempting to overtake a truck near the 10.7 km mark before the Panvel exit. The vehicle reportedly somersaulted multiple times, leaving it severely mangled and trapping the occupants inside. All three students sustained fatal injuries in the crash.
However, accounts from batchmates traveling in the other two vehicles present a slightly different narrative. They informed investigators that the SUV may have brushed against the truck while changing lanes, which could have caused the driver to lose control. Police authorities are currently examining both versions to determine the exact sequence of events.
Investigation and Official Statements
"We are investigating the exact cause of the accident and will register an FIR based on our findings," stated a senior officer from the Panvel taluka police station. Highway police have indicated that overspeeding might have been a contributing factor. "Prima facie, it appears the vehicle was at high speed when it lost control and overturned," an officer remarked.
Rescue teams were promptly dispatched to the location after an alert was received on the emergency helpline. The bodies of the deceased students were subsequently transported to a hospital in Panvel for postmortem examinations. In a somber development, two faculty members from IIT Bombay also arrived at the hospital to provide support and assistance.
Context and Aftermath
This tragic incident has cast a shadow over the IIT Bombay community, highlighting the dangers associated with road travel on busy expressways. The Mumbai-Pune Expressway is known for its high traffic volume and challenging driving conditions, particularly in areas with heavy truck movement. Authorities are urging drivers to exercise extreme caution, adhere to speed limits, and maintain safe distances from other vehicles to prevent similar accidents in the future.
The loss of these young lives serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of road safety measures. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on uncovering the precise causes to implement preventive strategies and ensure such tragedies are averted.
