In a significant law enforcement operation, police in Chhattisgarh's Durg district have uncovered an extensive illegal opium plantation spanning approximately 1.5 acres of agricultural land. The discovery has ignited a major political controversy after investigations revealed the farmland is connected to a local leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party's Kisan Morcha.
Strategic Concealment and Police Raid
The illicit crop was discovered during a targeted police raid conducted on March 6 in Samoda village, following specific intelligence about illegal cultivation activities. Law enforcement officials revealed that the opium plants had been strategically concealed by surrounding them with jowar (sorghum) crops, making detection from outside the field extremely difficult.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Manishankar Chandra confirmed the operation, stating, "Acting on specific intelligence about illegal cultivation, we have discovered about one-and-a-half acres of suspected opium crop. One suspect has been detained, and a comprehensive investigation is currently underway."
Political Connections and Immediate Fallout
The alleged accused has been identified as Vinayak Tamrakar, who holds association with the BJP Kisan Morcha. Police detained Tamrakar for detailed questioning following the discovery. In swift political action, the state BJP unit suspended Tamrakar under disciplinary measures soon after the allegations surfaced.
However, Tamrakar has denied any involvement in the illegal cultivation, claiming the action is "politically motivated" and asserting that the land in question does not belong to him but was given on lease.

As news of the opium crop spread through the region, hundreds of curious villagers descended upon the site to witness the unusual discovery firsthand. The sudden gathering created significant challenges for law enforcement, with eyewitnesses reporting jostling between villagers and police officers attempting to restrict access to the field.
Authorities responded with heavy police deployment to control the situation and cordon off the area. Revenue officials, including the tehsildar and revenue inspector, were summoned to properly document the crop before initiating further legal proceedings.
Well-Planned Cultivation Operation
Police investigations indicate the opium cultivation appeared meticulously planned and executed. Officials noted that the plants were deliberately grown in the middle of a larger legitimate crop to avoid suspicion. Further investigation revealed that laborers working on the field were reportedly brought from Khandwa district in neighboring Madhya Pradesh, suggesting an organized operation.

The incident took a sharply political turn when former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel visited Samoda village with supporters on Saturday to personally inspect the field where the opium crop was discovered.
Baghel launched a scathing attack on the ruling establishment, alleging that the accused maintained close connections with political leaders and senior officials that may have facilitated the illegal activity remaining undetected.
"Vinayak Tamrakar is said to be an influential person who has close access to ministers, MPs, MLAs, and even senior officers," Baghel told reporters at the site. "The fundamental question is how such extensive cultivation could occur over such a large area without the administration noticing it."
The former chief minister sharpened his criticism by questioning whether this represented an isolated incident or part of a broader network. He connected the case to wider narcotics issues in the state, noting that while drugs previously entered Chhattisgarh from outside states, local cultivation is now being reported.
Baghel demanded that "larger connections" between drug trafficking and political influence be thoroughly examined and called for answers from Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and Home Minister Vijay Sharma.
BJP Response and Counter-Arguments
BJP spokesperson Ujjawal Deepak defended the party's response, emphasizing the immediate action taken against the alleged accused. "More significant than the act itself is the decisive action state police have taken, demonstrating an unbiased approach," Deepak stated.
"Furthermore, the BJP has acted immediately against the alleged accused. Had this occurred under Congress rule, they would likely have continued selling the produce with no action taken. We are not avoiding responsibility but rather taking appropriate measures," he added, drawing a contrast with the opposition party's potential handling of similar situations.
