Mobile Internet Services Fully Restored in Meghalaya's Garo Hills Region
Mobile internet data services have been officially restored across all five districts of Meghalaya's Garo Hills region on March 18, bringing an end to a week-long digital blackout that had severely impacted daily life. The suspension was initially imposed on March 11 following widespread unrest and violent clashes in West Garo Hills that tragically resulted in two fatalities.
Violent Unrest Over Tribal Council Elections
The violence erupted from protests against the participation of non-tribal individuals in elections for the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC). The escalating law and order situation forced the state government to postpone the tribal council polls, which were originally scheduled for April 10. The deteriorating security conditions across the region necessitated this drastic measure to prevent further escalation.
In response to the violence, authorities have made significant arrests. So far, approximately 29 suspects have been taken into custody for their alleged involvement in inciting communal conflict over the election issue. Among those arrested is a former GHADC member, highlighting the seriousness with which authorities are treating the situation.
Official Notification and Curfew Status
The Home (Political) Department issued a formal notification on Wednesday revoking the March 11 order that had suspended internet services in West Garo Hills, East Garo Hills, South Garo Hills, North Garo Hills, and South West Garo Hills. The restoration took effect immediately, providing much-needed relief to residents who had been cut off from digital connectivity.
However, while internet services have returned, the curfew in West Garo Hills remains in force. The district administration had initially relaxed curfew hours from 6 am to 6 pm on March 18, but subsequently extended the restriction from 6 am on March 19 to 6 am on March 20. District Magistrate Vibhor Agarwal stated this extension was necessary to "restore normalcy and prevent further escalation of violence."
