ISF Announces First Candidate List with Key Surprises in West Bengal
The Indian Secular Front (ISF) on Monday released its initial list of 23 candidates for the upcoming elections, spanning nine districts in West Bengal. The announcement included two unexpected nominations that have stirred the political landscape in the state.
Surprise Candidates Shake Up Electoral Dynamics
In a move that caught many observers off guard, the ISF named Arabul Islam as its candidate for the Canning East constituency. Simultaneously, Mohammad Mafidul Haque, widely known as Mintu Sahaji, was selected to contest from Deganga. Sahaji, a former Trinamool Congress zilla parishad member from North 24 Parganas, had recently joined the ISF, leading to his expulsion from the Trinamool Congress on the same day.
Party chief Nawsad Siddique will once again stand for election from Bhangar, reinforcing the ISF's commitment to its stronghold. The party is currently part of an electoral alliance with the Left Front, aiming to consolidate opposition votes against the ruling Trinamool Congress.
Background and Political Implications of Key Nominations
Arabul Islam's nomination carries significant historical weight. He previously won the Bhangar seat on a Trinamool ticket in 2006 but faced defeat in 2011. In subsequent elections, he was denied a ticket by the Trinamool Congress in both 2016 and 2021. This year, the Trinamool has shifted its Canning East MLA, Saokat Molla, to contest from Bhangar, setting the stage for a direct confrontation.
Arabul confidently predicted that the Trinamool would lose both Bhangar and Canning East seats. In response, Molla asserted that the Trinamool would secure comfortable victories in both constituencies, highlighting the intense rivalry.
Mohammad Mafidul Haque's candidacy follows his public criticism of the official Trinamool candidate from Deganga on social media. He had also expressed concerns about the party's shrinking victory margins in the 2024 elections and lost booths during the panchayat polls, actions that previously drew the ire of Trinamool leadership.
Widespread Candidate Fielding and Supporters' Response
Beyond the headline nominations, the ISF has fielded candidates in several other key constituencies, demonstrating its broad electoral strategy. The list includes candidates for:
- Canning Paschim
- Magrahat Paschim
- Kulpi
- Baduria
- Amdanga
- Madhyamgram
- Haroa
- Basirhat North
Shortly after the list was released, enthusiastic supporters gathered at Hatishala in Bhangar to garland Nawsad Siddique and Arabul Islam, showcasing the party's grassroots mobilization and local support base.
This candidate announcement marks a pivotal moment in West Bengal's political narrative, as the ISF positions itself as a formidable force in alliance with the Left Front, challenging the dominance of the Trinamool Congress in multiple districts.
