IUML and MNM Join DMK-Led Black Flag Protest Against Delimitation Plan

The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) have officially joined the statewide black flag protest spearheaded by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), aimed at condemning the Union government's proposed delimitation exercise. This coordinated political action represents a significant show of unity among opposition parties in Tamil Nadu against what they perceive as a threat to the state's democratic rights.

IUML Calls Delimitation a "Historical Injustice"

IUML national president K M Kader Mohideen has strongly criticized the Union government's plan to redraw constituency boundaries based on population, labeling it a "historical injustice" against Tamil Nadu. Responding to Chief Minister M K Stalin's call for visible resistance, the IUML leadership has directed its cadres and officials at all organizational levels to participate in a symbolic one-day protest.

"All party functionaries and cadres are directed to hoist black flags at their residences to register their opposition," Mohideen stated in an official release. "They are encouraged to wear black badges on their shirts throughout the day while performing their duties. The party intends to highlight how the proposed constitutional amendments could weaken the democratic rights of the Tamil people."

Mohideen emphasized that the IUML stands firmly with its allies in protecting the autonomy and rights of the state. "This is not just a political issue; it is a fight for the future of our representation in the Union," he declared. "We must send a strong message to the BJP-led government that Tamil Nadu will not accept any move that undermines its stature."

MNM Alleges Strategic Weakening of Southern States

MNM, led by actor-politician and Rajya Sabha MP Kamal Haasan, has termed the delimitation move a strategic attempt to weaken the political influence of southern states. In a detailed statement, MNM general secretary Senthil Arumugam alleged that the bill to redraw parliamentary constituencies based on population is "geared toward strengthening north Indian states while betraying the south."

The party argued that Tamil Nadu and other southern neighbors were being unfairly penalized for their success in achieving national population control goals. "This bill, brought in with such haste, is a shortcut to suppress the voice of the south—pioneers in population management—within the halls of Parliament," the MNM statement read.

The party has instructed its functionaries to hoist black flags at headquarters and district units as a mark of condemnation. Furthermore, MNM has urged its cadres to educate the public about how the new delimitation could lead to a permanent imbalance in India's democratic structure.

"Our struggle is about protecting the constitutional rights and the future of the Tamil people," Arumugam added. "We will not sit idly while the democratic weight of our state is systematically devalued."

Broader Opposition from Secular Progressive Alliance

The delimitation move has drawn sharp criticism from the broader Secular Progressive Alliance, with Chief Minister M K Stalin asserting that population-based delimitation would unfairly penalize southern states, particularly Tamil Nadu. Stalin has highlighted that Tamil Nadu has successfully implemented national population control goals and warned that this delimitation could lead to significant erosion of the state's political representation and voice in Parliament.

The coordinated protest action represents a significant political development in Tamil Nadu, with multiple opposition parties uniting against what they perceive as a constitutional threat to the state's democratic representation. The black flag protest symbolizes their collective opposition to the delimitation proposal and their determination to protect Tamil Nadu's political interests at the national level.
