Jaipur Mosque Balcony Collapse Injures 21 After Friday Prayers
A tragic structural failure at a mosque in Jaipur left at least 21 people injured on Friday afternoon. The incident occurred at Firdaus Masjid, located in the Bhatta Basti area, shortly after the conclusion of the weekly congregational prayers.
Chaotic Scene as Wall Gives Way
The collapse happened at approximately 2:30pm, just as numerous devotees were exiting the mosque following the afternoon namaz. Eyewitnesses described a scene of sudden chaos and panic when the balcony wall unexpectedly gave way, sending bricks and debris crashing down onto the worshippers gathered below.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Bajrang Singh provided initial details, stating, "Namaz had just concluded and many people were standing under the balcony when the wall suddenly gave way. Preliminary information suggests some children on the first floor may have been leaning against the wall at the time."
Structural Concerns and Witness Accounts
DCP Singh indicated that the structure, which was built with single bricks, appeared to have caved in due to potential structural issues. However, several witnesses offered additional perspectives, speculating that the movement of worshippers along the balcony during and after the prayers might have increased pressure on the aging construction.
One injured worshipper, nursing injuries to his back and waist, recounted the terrifying moment: "A large number of people were stepping out after offering namaz when the wall suddenly collapsed from above."
Another eyewitness, identified as Imtiaz, described the collapse as utterly terrifying. "After offering prayers, we were putting on our slippers and shoes when the balcony wall suddenly gave way. There was a loud thud and people began running in different directions," he recalled vividly.
Victims and Their Injuries
Among those affected was a woman who spoke about her husband Salman, a plumber by profession, who was caught in the chaos. "During the prayers, the wall suddenly fell with a loud bang and people began shouting for help," she stated emotionally.
The injured included:
- Suhail, 15: A young boy from Bihar who suffered a head injury. His mother Tamanna Khatoon expressed deep fears for his well-being following the incident.
- Abdul Samad, 45: An iron fabricator who sustained injuries to both his hand and leg.
- Mohammad Aslam, 50: Who suffered a significant shoulder injury from the falling debris.
Eyewitness Yunus described the scene as "terrifying," noting the widespread panic that ensued when the wall fell. "When the wall collapsed, it felt like a small tremor," he said, emphasizing the suddenness and force of the incident.
Emergency Response and Hospitalizations
Police and emergency response teams arrived swiftly at the scene, working alongside local residents to clear debris and rescue those who were trapped. The coordinated effort helped ensure that all victims received prompt medical attention.
Of the 21 injured individuals, medical authorities distributed them between two healthcare facilities:
- 10 patients were admitted to Kanwatia Hospital for treatment.
- 11 patients were taken to the SMS trauma ward for specialized care.
Authorities have confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the collapse. The incident has raised concerns about structural safety in older religious buildings, particularly those that accommodate large congregations during peak prayer times.
