Jaipur Sanitation Workers Stage Protest at Municipal Headquarters
Sanitation workers employed by the Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) organized a significant protest outside the JMC headquarters located at Lal Kothi on Tuesday. The demonstration was held to voice their frustration over several unresolved issues that have been pending for an extended period.
Key Demands of the Protesting Workers
The workers, who gathered from 11 AM to 3 PM, outlined a list of critical demands that have been repeatedly ignored by the authorities. Their primary concerns include:
- Pending promotions that have been delayed indefinitely.
- Union elections that have been postponed for over 14 months.
- Lack of clarity on deductions related to the Rajasthan Government Health Scheme (RGHS).
- Unpaid arrears and non-deposit of General Provident Fund (GPF) money.
- Cancellation of leaves without providing compensatory leave, affecting their work-life balance.
Additionally, the workers raised issues regarding notices issued to them and the implementation of a biometric system, which they claim is negatively impacting their service records.
Union Representative's Statement
Pawan Chaudhary, a candidate for union representative, addressed the media during the protest. He stated, "We have engaged in discussions with the JMC commissioner, who has requested a seven-day period to address our grievances. If no concrete action is taken within this timeframe, we are prepared to escalate our protest with a larger demonstration next week."
Outcome and Future Uncertainty
The protest concluded after JMC officials listened to the workers' demands. However, the sanitation staff remain skeptical about whether their issues will be genuinely resolved. The workers expressed that despite multiple complaints to the authorities in the past, they have not received any satisfactory redress, leading to this organized protest.
The situation highlights ongoing challenges in municipal governance and worker rights in Jaipur, with the potential for further unrest if the demands are not met promptly.
