Three Married Couples Enter Godhra Municipal Election Fray Together
In an unusual political development in Godhra, three married couples have decided to contest the upcoming municipal elections together, moving from sharing their homes to sharing the political stage. Each couple is pairing their experience with strategic campaigning to enhance their prospects of electoral success in their respective wards.
Ward 5: The Patels' Independent Bid After BJP Ticket Denial
In Ward 5, four-term councillor Bharti Patel is running as an independent candidate after being denied a ticket by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). She is joined in this electoral battle by her husband, Satish Patel, who is also contesting from the same ward. Satish, a former municipality employee, explained that local support significantly influenced their decision.
"People from our ward and community wanted us to contest. They insisted that I should also file my nomination," he stated. He added that Bharti was denied a BJP ticket due to the party's age criteria, which prompted their independent run.
Ward 9: The Bakars Focus on Public Service as Grandparents
In Ward 9, Yakub Bakar and his wife Sharifa are contesting together as independent candidates. Yakub has been fighting elections independently since 2005 and has secured victory twice in the past. He noted that with their family responsibilities now reduced, both he and his wife can dedicate more time to public service.
"We are grandparents now. Others can take care of the home. We want to work for people," Yakub said. He emphasized that his wife's entry into politics represents a step towards empowering women within their family structure.
Sharifa expressed strong confidence in their joint campaign efforts. "I understand the responsibilities of a councillor and am ready to take them on. There is no hesitation," she affirmed, highlighting her preparedness for the role.
Ward 8: The Chandas Leverage Community Work Experience
Another couple in the electoral race is Ashraf Chanda and his wife Raziya from Ward 8. Ashraf has contested three consecutive municipal polls since 2010, winning once in 2015. He pointed out that his wife has long been actively involved in community work, which positions her well for a political role.
"Whenever I was away, she would handle people's issues, even accompanying them to hospitals in emergencies," Ashraf explained, underscoring Raziya's hands-on experience with local concerns.
Strategic Advantages of Couples Contesting Together
Political sources indicate that beyond shared commitment, strategic considerations play a crucial role in these couples' decisions to run together. Contesting as a couple increases the likelihood of at least one victory, and if both partners win, it could significantly strengthen their influence within the civic body.
In a closely contested election, independent winners like these couples could become pivotal in government formation, thereby enhancing their bargaining power and ability to advocate for their wards' needs.
