Tamil Nadu Jallikattu Protest Demands Compensation for Deceased Bull Tamer
Members of the Tamil Nadu jallikattu welfare association staged a significant protest at the Madurai district collectorate on Monday, calling for urgent compensation for a bull tamer who tragically lost his life during a recent jallikattu event. Balaguru, a 24-year-old resident of Alanganallur, sustained fatal injuries when he was gored in the neck by a bull during a jallikattu event held at Pugaiyilaipatti in Dindigul on February 11. The young man was rushed to the Dindigul government hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival, underscoring the severity of the incident.
Protest Demands and Community Support
The protesters are demanding a solatium of 10 lakh rupees and a government job for Balaguru's widow, who is six months pregnant. Mudakathan Mani, president of the Tamil Nadu Jallikattu Training Centre, emphasized the family's plight, stating, "Balaguru was only married for one year, and his wife is six months pregnant." He confirmed that a petition has been submitted to the revenue divisional officer (RDO) and vowed that protests will continue until the association's demands are met.
Criticism of Medical Facilities
Mani also pointed out that the fatality could have been avoided with better on-site medical facilities. "The lack of adequate medical facilities and emergency care at the event directly contributed to the tragedy," he asserted, highlighting a critical gap in safety protocols for jallikattu events. This issue raises broader concerns about the need for improved healthcare infrastructure at such traditional gatherings to prevent future incidents.
