Jalpaiguri Woman Assaulted Over Instagram Love Emoji

A shocking case of domestic violence has emerged from West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district where a woman and her sister were allegedly assaulted by her husband and his family members after she confronted him for using a 'love' emoji on his former girlfriend's Instagram post.

Confrontation Over Social Media Interaction Turns Violent

The incident occurred on Saturday at Domohani village in the Dhupguri area, leaving three persons injured, one of them seriously. According to police reports, the victim, identified as Rubina, discovered her husband Shahjahan's social media activity when she checked his phone.

Rubina found that Shahjahan had reacted with a heart emoji on a picture uploaded by his former girlfriend on Instagram. When she investigated further by reading their chat history, she discovered that the two had been maintaining regular communication, which included inappropriate messages that crossed marital boundaries.

Family Joins Assault When Sister Intervenes

Rubina, who had been aware of her husband's former relationship when they got married over a year ago, decided to confront Shahjahan about his ongoing communication with his ex-girlfriend. The confrontation quickly escalated into a heated argument between the couple.

Feeling threatened and overwhelmed, Rubina called her sister Beauty Parveen, who lives nearby, for assistance. Beauty immediately rushed to Rubina's in-laws' house after learning that her sister was being beaten.

However, when Beauty tried to intervene and protect her sister, the situation turned more violent. Shahjahan and his family members allegedly turned their aggression toward Beauty as well. In her complaint, Beauty claimed that Shahjahan's sister Rabeya attacked her with a bucket and a shovel, causing severe head injuries that made her collapse on the floor.

Aftermath and Police Action

The violent scuffle resulted in injuries to multiple people, including Shahjahan's mother who also got hurt during the incident. Local residents quickly came to the aid of the two sisters and arranged for their admission to Dhupguri Sub-Divisional Hospital for medical treatment.

Police authorities arrived at the scene soon after being informed about the assault and have initiated an investigation into the matter. An official police complaint has been filed at the Dhupguri police station, and the case is currently under active investigation.

This incident highlights the growing concerns about how social media interactions are triggering domestic conflicts and violence across India. The case also raises serious questions about women's safety within marital homes and the need for stronger mechanisms to address domestic violence promptly.
