Jawali Verdict: Rebels Eclipse Official Candidates in Himachal Minister's Constituency
Jawali Verdict: Rebels Eclipse Official Candidates in Himachal

The Congress party faced a significant political setback in the Jawali Assembly constituency, represented by Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Minister Chander Kumar, after failing to secure a single Zila Parishad (ZP) ward in the recently concluded Panchayati Raj elections.

Rebels and Independents Dominate

The results underscored a strong voter preference for rebel and independent candidates. BJP rebels and supporters of former MLA Arjun Singh claimed three ZP wards, while a Congress rebel emerged victorious in the fourth. Notably, none of the official candidates backed by either the Congress or the BJP managed to win a seat.

Triangular Contests and Congress Performance

Political observers noted that the electoral battle in Jawali was largely a contest between BJP-backed candidates and BJP rebels, resulting in triangular contests that pushed three of the four Congress-supported candidates to third place.

  • In the Jawali ZP ward, Congress-backed Sansar Singh Sansari received 1,804 votes, while BJP-supported Ravinder polled 3,304 votes. The seat was won by a BJP rebel candidate with 3,305 votes.
  • In Maira ward, BJP rebel Shashi Bala won with 5,975 votes. Congress-supported Anjana Devi secured 3,756 votes, and BJP-backed Anuradha received 3,462 votes.
  • In Bhali ward, BJP rebel Shalu won comfortably with 9,028 votes. BJP-supported Mamta secured 4,545 votes, while Congress-backed Neelam polled 2,828 votes.
  • In Jarot ward, Congress rebel Vijay Kumar won with 4,401 votes. BJP-supported Lakshman Singh finished second with 3,223 votes, while Congress-backed Sunil Dutt managed only 1,537 votes.

Implications for Zila Parishad Leadership

The outcome is expected to influence the upcoming elections for the Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson of the politically significant Kangra Zila Parishad. Political circles believe the three victorious BJP rebels are likely to support the BJP in the Zila Parishad leadership election, while Congress rebel Vijay Kumar may align with the Congress.

Internal Factionalism Exposed

The results have also highlighted internal factionalism within both major parties, particularly in Jawali, where the poor performance of official candidates has raised questions about organisational cohesion ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
