Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren Directs Officials to Formulate Comprehensive Eco-Tourism Strategy

In a significant move to harness the state's natural assets, Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Tuesday issued directives to officials to develop a robust and detailed plan aimed at boosting eco-tourism across Jharkhand. The initiative underscores the immense potential of this sector to enhance livelihoods and promote sustainable development.

High-Level Meeting Focuses on Eco-Tourism Expansion

Chairing the fourth meeting of the governing body of the Jharkhand Eco Tourism Authority (JETA) at his chamber in the Jharkhand Vidhan Sabha, Soren emphasized the need for a coordinated approach. He instructed officials to identify all potential sites suitable for eco-tourism development, ensuring a thorough assessment of the state's diverse landscapes.

Key officials from the forest, tourism, and water resources departments were present during the meeting, highlighting the cross-departmental collaboration required for this ambitious project.

Integrating Local Communities and Conservation Efforts

During the discussions, Chief Minister Soren stressed the importance of linking local communities with employment opportunities generated by eco-tourism. "All three departments and other stakeholders should jointly work on a robust plan to promote eco-tourism," Soren stated. He added that the state's abundant natural resources and attractive landscapes offer immense possibilities for this sector.

"Local people at the identified sites must be linked with employment and nature conservation activities," he emphasized, urging officials to prioritize community involvement and environmental protection in their planning.

Focus on Religious Sites and Existing Success Stories

Soren also directed officials to explore the eco-tourism potential at major religious sites, recognizing their cultural and ecological significance. This approach aims to blend spiritual tourism with sustainable practices, creating unique visitor experiences.

Officials briefed the Chief Minister on ongoing plans for the promotion and development of eco-tourism at several key locations, including:

  • Maithon Dam
  • Netarhat
  • Patratu Dam
  • Chaibasa
  • Dumka
  • Ranchi

Discussions also centered on replicating successful models, such as the eco-tourism site recently developed at Massanjore in Dumka. An official from the tourism department noted, "We are considering developing an eco-tourism site in Patratu along the lines of Massanjore, where cottages and other amenities have been set up, attracting a good local crowd."

Building a Sustainable Future Through Eco-Tourism

This directive from Chief Minister Hemant Soren marks a proactive step towards leveraging Jharkhand's natural beauty for economic growth while ensuring environmental stewardship. By fostering collaboration among departments and engaging local communities, the state aims to create a thriving eco-tourism sector that benefits both people and the planet.

The plan is expected to not only boost tourism revenue but also generate employment opportunities, particularly in rural areas, aligning with broader goals of sustainable development and conservation.
