The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam founder assumed office after securing the backing of the VCK and IUML, which increased his support to 120 MLAs, two more than the required majority mark of 118 in the assembly. The actor-turned-politician officially entered Fort St. George as the state's new leader. In his first address after assuming office, he announced that domestic consumers would receive free electricity for up to 200 units. The announcement was one of the first welfare measures introduced by his government.
