In a dramatic turn of events, Kannur Mayor P Indira was reportedly injured during a physical altercation that erupted amid a protest organized by Left Democratic Front (LDF) workers in front of the corporation office on Tuesday. The mayor, who initially continued with her duties, was later admitted to the district hospital for medical attention.
Protest Turns Violent as Mayor Attempts to Enter Office
The incident unfolded around 9:45 AM when Mayor Indira, accompanied by United Democratic Front (UDF) members, attempted to enter the corporation office premises. At the time, LDF workers were staging a protest, alleging that the corporation was obstructing developmental activities funded by the MLA allocation of minister Kadannappalli Ramachandran.
As the mayor and her supporters tried to access the office, a scuffle broke out with the demonstrating LDF workers. During the confrontation, Mayor Indira reportedly sustained injuries. Despite the chaotic scene, she demonstrated resilience by proceeding to chair the scheduled council meeting at the corporation hall shortly after the incident.
Conflicting Accounts from Political Factions
Following the altercation, UDF workers staged a sit-in protest on the road, condemning the attack on the mayor. Abdul Kareem Chelery, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) district president, strongly criticized the incident, stating that the assault on Mayor Indira was utterly condemnable. He accused LDF workers of attempting to conceal the ineffectiveness of minister Kadannappalli Ramachandran by instigating violence.
In contrast, the LDF leadership presented a different version of events. They claimed that Mayor Indira was not assaulted by protestors. Instead, they asserted that she accidentally injured herself by hitting a metal barricade while entering the premises, leading to her subsequent hospitalization after developing physical difficulties post-meeting.
