Kanpur's New Year Traffic Plan: Key Routes Diverted, Auto-Free Zones Declared
Kanpur New Year Traffic Diversions: Full Plan for Dec 31 & Jan 1

In anticipation of massive crowds during the New Year festivities, the Kanpur Traffic Police have unveiled a comprehensive traffic management plan. The arrangements, announced on Tuesday, will involve significant route diversions and the creation of several vehicle-free zones in the city's core areas to ensure smooth movement and safety.

Key Traffic Diversions and Timings

The special traffic arrangements will be active in two phases. The first phase will run from 2:00 PM on Wednesday, December 31, until 2:00 AM on Thursday, January 1, 2026. The second phase will then be implemented from 10:00 AM on January 1 until midnight. The focus is on managing the flow around major congregation points like Bada Chauraha and the ISKCON temple area.

Several major intersections will see restrictions. Vehicles from Meghdoot intersection will not be permitted to proceed directly towards Bada Chauraha. Instead, they must take a detour via Sarsaiyyaghat intersection, Chetna intersection, and then head towards Z Square Mall or Bada Chauraha. Similarly, traffic from Kotwali intersection, Naveen Market, and Mayormile intersection aiming for Z Square Mall or Bada Chauraha cannot go straight. They must turn left at Thaggu ke Laddu intersection and proceed via Bhargav Hospital intersection and DJ Gate Kachahri Chetna intersection.

Public Transport and Parking Adjustments

Specific rules have been laid out for public transport vehicles. All buses, autos, and e-rickshaws coming from Meghdoot intersection via Sarsaiyyaghat towards Bada Chauraha will be halted before the DM office gate. These vehicles will be allowed to park along the roadside between Sarsaiyyaghat intersection and the DM office gate exclusively for passenger pick-up and drop-off.

Furthermore, e-rickshaws and autos originating from Corset intersection, Sadbhavna intersection, and Kotwali intersection will not be allowed to go beyond Somdatt Plaza. They must use Somdatt Plaza as their designated parking and passenger handling point.

Declared No Auto-Rickshaw Zones and Heavy Vehicle Restrictions

To decongest key stretches, the police have declared several areas as no-go zones for e-rickshaws and autos. These include:

  • Meghdoot intersection to Bada Chauraha
  • Chetna intersection to Bada Chauraha
  • DJ Gate to Thaggu ke Laddu intersection
  • Somdatt Plaza to Bada Chauraha
  • Kotwali intersection to Bada Chauraha

Restrictions are also in place for medium and heavy vehicles near the ISKCON temple. Such vehicles from Singhpur intersection, Baniyapurwa intersection (via Yash Kothari), and Mainawati Marg intersection will not be allowed to proceed towards the temple. They must use alternative routes via Kalyanpur to reach their destinations. Additionally, no vehicle from Shivala intersection will be allowed to move towards Bada Chauraha.

For revellers heading to the Ganga Barrage from Kothari Chauraha, a dedicated parking facility has been identified near the Boat Club to accommodate vehicles.

The police urge all citizens and visitors to plan their travel accordingly, cooperate with traffic personnel on duty, and follow the announced diversions to ensure a safe and hassle-free New Year celebration in Kanpur.
