Karnataka: Union Minister Somanna, Congress Leaders Clash at Event; BJP & Congress MLAs Fight in Bidar
Karnataka: BJP, Congress Leaders Clash in Two Separate Incidents

Karnataka witnessed dramatic scenes of political confrontation on Monday as elected representatives from the ruling Congress and the opposition BJP engaged in heated altercations in two separate incidents, highlighting the state's tense political climate.

Railway Overpass Inauguration Turns into Protest Arena in Koppal

The first incident unfolded in Koppal district's Hitnal village during the inauguration of a railway overpass. Union Minister V Somanna faced strong protests from Congress workers and leaders, including Kannada and Culture Minister Shivaraj Tangadagi and Congress MLA K Raghavendra Hitnal.

The protest erupted over allegations that elected representatives from the Congress were deliberately excluded from the event's invitation cards and banners. As the demonstration gained momentum, Somanna attempted to calm the protesters. He argued that for central government programs, it is standard protocol to feature only pictures of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the stage banners.

The Union Minister later accused the Karnataka minister and MLA of mobilizing their supporters to disrupt the official program. In a defiant move, Tangadagi and Hitnal breached the police security cordon and marched onto the stage, leading to a heated verbal exchange with Somanna and other BJP leaders present.

The confrontation forced the organizers to cut the event short. Speaking to the media afterward, Somanna defended the proceedings, stating there was no breach of protocol as the names of state ministers and local representatives were duly inscribed on the inauguration plaque. "When their names are on the plaque, I don't know why they are doing this," he remarked.

Countering this, Minister Shivaraj Tangadagi asserted that the omission from the invites and banners was a mark of disrespect. "We are ready to tolerate (the insult). But party workers will not tolerate it," he declared, explaining the reason behind the protest.

MLC and MLA Nearly Come to Blows in Bidar Meeting

In a second, unrelated incident, a quarterly progress review meeting under the Karnataka Development Programme in Bidar descended into chaos. A war of words between Congress MLC Bhimrao Patil and BJP MLA Siddu Patil over a contentious land encroachment issue quickly escalated.

The situation flared up when Bhimrao Patil took strong exception to allegations of land grabbing leveled against him by Siddu Patil. Provoked by the accusations, the Congress MLC rushed towards the seated BJP MLA, challenging him with words to the effect of, "Let's see what you can do." He raised his arms in a threatening manner, and it appeared the two were on the verge of a physical fight.

Quick intervention by a police personnel, who restrained Bhimrao Patil, prevented the altercation from turning violent. The presiding minister, Forest, Ecology and Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre, who is also the in-charge minister for Bidar district, was compelled to call off the meeting immediately after the clash.

Fallout and Political Implications

These twin incidents, both occurring on Monday, January 5, 2026, underscore the deepening political rivalry in Karnataka. The Koppal event highlights the ongoing tussle for credit over development projects between the state's Congress government and the BJP-led central administration. The Bidar clash reveals how local issues, such as land disputes, can trigger open hostility in public forums.

The confrontations have drawn significant attention, raising questions about decorum in political discourse and the functioning of administrative review meetings. With emotions running high, these events are likely to fuel further political sparring in the state in the days to come.
