Karnataka Government Proposes Major Infrastructure and Development Push for Belagavi District
In a significant move to bolster security and infrastructure, the Siddaramaiah-led Karnataka government has announced a comprehensive development package for Belagavi district as part of the 2026–27 state budget. The proposals, unveiled by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah during his budget presentation in the legislative assembly on Friday, encompass a wide range of initiatives aimed at enhancing public safety, agricultural productivity, industrial growth, and educational facilities.
Permanent Security Barracks and Police Infrastructure
A key highlight is the allocation of Rs 20 crore for constructing permanent barracks in Belagavi to accommodate approximately 1,000 security personnel. Currently, police and other security forces are housed in private or temporary facilities during the legislature session, which poses logistical challenges. The new barracks will provide dedicated, secure lodging, improving efficiency for bandobust duties and ensuring better deployment during critical events.
Additionally, the budget includes plans for a new police station at Yaragatti and the construction of Prajasoudha at Bailahongal, further strengthening law enforcement and administrative infrastructure in the region.
Major Irrigation and Water Supply Projects
The government has prioritized completing several long-pending lift irrigation works to address water scarcity and support agriculture. Notable projects include:
- Construction of an aqueduct across the Malaprabha River downstream of the Navilutheertha Dam in the Krishna–Malaprabha valley.
- A project to supply water to villages in Ramdurg taluk, enhancing access to potable water.
- Building a retaining wall along the eroded bank of the Malaprabha River near Gonnagar village to prevent soil degradation.
- Implementation of the Yaragatti Lift Irrigation Project and the Renuka Lift Irrigation Project to boost irrigation capabilities.
- Development of a bridge-cum-barrage near Chikkahattiholi village in Khanapur taluk for improved water management.
Furthermore, lake-filling initiatives such as the Kudachi lake-filling project in Raibag taluk and similar works in Ramdurg taluk are proposed to enhance water storage and recharge groundwater levels.
Industrial and Agricultural Development
To spur economic growth, the budget outlines the establishment of a 1,000-acre industrial park in Belagavi district. This park is expected to attract investments, create jobs, and promote industrial diversification in the area.
On the agricultural front, the government will set up an agriculture college in Athani, providing specialized education and training to farmers and students. Additionally, CT scanning facilities will be installed at veterinary colleges in Belagavi, improving animal healthcare services.
Educational, Cultural, and Social Initiatives
The development package also includes several educational and cultural projects:
- Establishment of a first-grade college in Belagavi Rural to expand higher education access.
- Construction of a post-matric hostel with a capacity of 150 students, supporting educational opportunities for marginalized communities.
- Creation of a traditional wrestling arena (desi kusthi akhada) at Belagundi to promote local sports and cultural heritage.
- Formation of the Veer Rani Belawadi Mallamma Foundation to honor historical figures and support community initiatives.
- Development of the Matsya Darshini aquarium, aimed at boosting tourism and environmental awareness.
These proposals reflect the government's holistic approach to development, targeting multiple sectors to improve the quality of life and economic prospects in Belagavi district. The budget's focus on infrastructure, water management, and social welfare is expected to have a lasting impact on the region's growth trajectory.
