A devastating road accident in Karnataka has claimed two more lives, pushing the final death toll to seven. The tragic incident involved a private bus that veered off a bridge and plunged into a canal in Haveri district.
Details of the Haveri District Tragedy
The accident occurred on the morning of Saturday, February 15, 2025, near Byadagi in the Haveri district. A bus operated by the SRM Travels company was en route from Bengaluru to Hubballi. For reasons still under investigation, the driver lost control of the vehicle.
The bus crashed through the railing of a bridge over the Neerasagar irrigation canal and fell into the water body below. The impact was severe, causing immediate fatalities and leaving many passengers critically injured.
Rescue Operations and Rising Casualties
Local authorities, including police and fire and emergency services, launched a swift rescue operation. They pulled out numerous passengers from the mangled wreckage. Initially, five individuals were declared dead at the scene or shortly after.
Several injured victims were rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical treatment. Among them was the bus driver, Manjunath H (aged 35). Despite receiving care, his condition deteriorated. Manjunath succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, February 16, becoming the sixth victim of this tragedy.
In a further sad development, another injured passenger, identified as Mohan, also passed away while undergoing treatment. His death brought the final toll to seven lives lost.

The Haveri district police have registered a case and are conducting a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash. Authorities are examining all possible angles, including driver error, mechanical failure, and road conditions.
This fatal accident has once again highlighted critical concerns about road safety on state highways and the maintenance standards of private transport operators. The community of Byadagi and the families of the victims are in mourning, seeking answers and accountability for the loss.
