Karnataka Chief Minister Appeals for Calm Following Bagalkot Procession Violence
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has issued a strong appeal for peace and communal harmony in the state after incidents of stone-pelting and unrest disrupted a Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti procession in Bagalkot on Friday. The CM described the events as "unfortunate" and urged citizens to remain united while authorities investigate the matter thoroughly.
Details of the Bagalkot Incident
The disturbance occurred in Bagalkot's old town area when stones were reportedly thrown near Panka Masjid as the Shivaji Jayanti rally passed through. According to police reports, Hindu activist Prakash Arakeri and a police constable sustained injuries during the violence. Eight individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident, including a person named Tanzim who is alleged to have thrown stones, and seven others accused of obstructing police duties.
During the unrest, miscreants set fire to three pushcarts at a nearby market, destroying vegetables, cash, and other goods. Police personnel quickly responded to douse the flames. A local woman identified as Jannatabi was seen mourning the loss of her cash and belongings in the aftermath of the destruction.
Police Response and Investigation
Superintendent of Police Siddharth Goyal confirmed that two stones were thrown at the procession and stated that authorities are reviewing video footage to identify all culprits involved. "Security personnel have been deployed across the city, and the situation is under control," Goyal assured the public.
In response to the incident, Assistant Commissioner Santosh Jagalasara issued a city-wide prohibition order effective until midnight on February 24 to prevent further disturbances.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah emphasized that police have taken swift action following the violence and that a thorough investigation is underway. "I appeal to all citizens to maintain peace and unity," the CM stated. "The police have taken swift action and made arrests. A thorough investigation is underway to identify all responsible parties, and strict action will be taken irrespective of who is involved. I urge everyone not to fall prey to rumours or provocation."
Hindu activists have condemned the incident and demanded that the Northern Inspector General of Police visit the city to assess the situation. They have warned of a potential Bagalkot bandh (shutdown) if those responsible for the violence are not properly apprehended and held accountable.
