Karnataka Minister Sounds Alarm on Critical Regional Issues
Primary and Secondary Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa on Wednesday voiced serious concerns regarding pressing environmental, health, and infrastructure challenges affecting the Shivamogga region. Speaking to reporters, the minister outlined multiple areas requiring immediate attention and intervention.
Environmental Concerns and Unseasonal Rains
Madhu Bangarappa highlighted fears of a disrupted monsoon cycle due to unseasonal early rainfall. He warned that this irregular weather pattern could lead to significant drinking water shortages and extensive crop damage, particularly in his Soraba constituency. The minister emphasized the potential agricultural and economic repercussions if the monsoon fails to stabilize.
Kyasanur Forest Disease Outbreak and Health Response
Addressing the Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD) outbreak, Bangarappa confirmed four fatalities across Hosanagar, Sagar, and Thirthahalli taluks. In response to the health crisis, he announced that 10-bed wards have been prepared in every taluk to manage cases. While a vaccine for KFD remains pending, the minister provided a positive update, noting that 81 out of the 104 infected individuals have successfully recovered.
Infrastructure Setbacks and Flight Service Suspension
On the infrastructure front, Bangarappa revealed that IndiGo flight services will be suspended from May 1 at the Shivamogga Rashtrakavi Kuvempu Airport. He stated that he has already escalated this matter to Industries and Infrastructure Minister MB Patil, seeking urgent resolution to maintain regional connectivity and economic activity.
Teacher Recruitment and Government Initiatives
The minister also addressed teacher recruitment, confirming that the government is prepared to hire 17,000 teachers once the reservation matrix is finalized. Bangarappa expressed his intention to complete the recruitment process within 85 days after obtaining legal clearances, potentially concluding by June. This move aims to strengthen the educational framework in the state.
Criticism of Central Government and Funding Issues
Bangarappa did not hold back in his criticism of the Central government and local MPs, accusing them of maintaining silence on what he described as tax injustice and the withholding of central grants to Karnataka. He alleged that state development schemes are being deliberately stalled and asserted that the Centre has failed to support Karnataka's progress despite clear public electoral support.
