Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker U T Khader on Tuesday dismissed speculation that he was lobbying for a ministerial berth in the state cabinet. He clarified that his name was among the frontrunners for a cabinet position when the Siddaramaiah-led government was formed, but he was subsequently chosen as the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly.
Khader's clarification
Addressing the media in Bengaluru, Khader said, "There is no truth in the rumors that I am lobbying for a ministerial post. When the government was formed, my name was considered for a cabinet role, but the party leadership decided to appoint me as Speaker. I accepted the responsibility wholeheartedly."
He further added that his focus remains on discharging his duties as Speaker impartially and ensuring the smooth functioning of the Assembly. "I have no desire to hold any other position at this moment," he asserted.
Background
The speculation gained traction after some political observers noted that Khader, a senior Congress leader from Dakshina Kannada, had been overlooked for a ministerial position despite being a strong contender. However, Khader dismissed these claims, emphasizing that the Speaker's role is equally significant.
"Being Speaker is a position of great responsibility and honor. I am committed to upholding the dignity of the office," he said.
Political analysts believe that Khader's denial is aimed at putting an end to any internal discord within the Congress party. The ruling party has been keen on projecting unity, especially ahead of the upcoming legislative sessions.
Khader also urged party workers to focus on developmental work rather than engaging in speculation about leadership positions. "Our priority should be the welfare of the people of Karnataka," he concluded.
